POCATELLO, Idaho – South Dakota State women's soccer opened its weekend with a 2-0 victory over Idaho State Thursday evening, using a pair of second-half goal to move past the Bengals.
Â
The Jackrabbits, who finished the game with 18 shots and five shots on goal, improved to 5-4 with the win.
"It's hard to win on the road and Idaho State made it very difficult for us," head coach
Brock Thompson said. "I thought we lost our composure in the first half, but were able to regain it in the second half, which is a tremendous credit to our players."
Â
Maggie Smither recorded nine saves over a complete-game performance at goalkeeper, netting her fourth shutout of the season while facing 21 total shots from ISU.
Â
Offensively,
Karlee Manding led the way with a three-point showing, scoring the game-winner and first goal of the night off an assist from Leah Manueleleua. Manding also assisted on
Bianca Madonia's first career goal as the Schaumburg, Illinois native sealed SDSU's victory late.
Annie Williams had a team-high four shots, putting two on goal. She and
Alexa Hepner played all 90 minutes in the back row.
Â
Scoreless after a back-and-forth opening period that saw 26 combined shots, South Dakota State broke through in the 58th for the eventual game-winner. Manuleleua picked up the assist after her cross found the feet of Manding, who finished from the top of the box for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Â
In the driver's seat for the first time on the evening, the Jackrabbits kept the momentum and added an insurance goal late to put the game out of reach. In the 85th, Manding fired a ball to Madonia, who beat the keeper from 18 yards out to put SDSU ahead 2-0, where it stayed the rest of the way.
