MACOMB, Ill. – South Dakota State women's soccer capped off a perfect weekend with a 3-0 victory Sunday at Western Illinois behind a trio of second-half goals.
Â
The Jackrabbits improved to 7-4-1 with the win and are now 2-0 in Summit League play after
Darien Poelstra,
Karlee Manding and
Abigail Kastens found the back of the net and
Carina McLennan added an assist.
Â
SDSU won the shot battle, 16-8, and dominated the Leathernecks in shots on goal, 9-3.
Â
"I thought we were a little sluggish from the opening whistle, but we got stronger as the game wore on," head coach
Brock Thompson said. "Certainly, that's a credit to the character of the young ladies in our program. I thought Carina and Karlee's energy on the field early in the second half changed the trajectory of the match."
Â
Scoreless through the opening half, State struck early in the second period with two goals in less than two minutes.
Â
Poelstra scored the game's first goal at 49:20, stealing a deflected pass off a Western Illinois defender, and in a 1-on-1 situation beat the goalkeeper for her third career score.
Â
82 seconds later, South Dakota State went up 2-0 as Manding recorded her fifth goal of the campaign, taking a pass from McLennan into the box and dribbling it into the left side of the net.
Â
That score held until the final minute of action, when the Jacks added one more score off the foot of Kastens. With the clock winding down, Kastens took possession outside the box, and after beating a defender lifted a shot over the Leatherneck keeper's head at 89:45 for her second goal of the year.
