OGDEN, Utah — South Dakota State scored the three first goals of the evening, but had to hold off a Weber State comeback bid to close out a 3-2 victory on Thursday at Wildcat Soccer Field.

Neither team recorded a shot in the opening 14 minutes before SDSU's MaKynlie Cade had an attempt saved.

The Jackrabbits struck first in the 18th minute on a corner kick. Emma Brezenski served up a cross into the box that was headed backwards by Ellie Gusman. The ball bounced towards the back post where Gentry Williams easily booted it into the net, giving SDSU an early 1-0 lead.

Not even two minutes came off the clock before the Jacks scored again. This time, a pair of passes from Mia Bosch to Williams sent the ball past the Weber State back line. Jenna Maloy was on the receiving end of the pass. She made a move past the Wildcats' goalkeeper and scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season to make it 2-0 Jackrabbits in the 20th minute.

South Dakota State continued the pressure on the attack. The 33rd minute saw Xehlia Salanoa battle past a defender and hit a shot from the left side of the box off the opposite post. The ball deflected back into the middle of the field and Brezenski stepped up to boot the ball into the goal, giving the Jacks a 3-0 edge.

Weber State had one shot on goal accounted for in the first half, but made it count. A foul called in the box in the 43rd minute led to a penalty kick opportunity for the Wildcats. Lily Blum hit a laser to the top right corner of the goal on her attempt to cut the score to 3-1 heading into the half.

Blum notched another goal early in the second half as the Wildcats tried to mount a rally. Weber State had two quick shots to begin the half, with the second giving Blum a brace in the 48th minute to make it a 3-2 margin.

The Wildcats continued to push the ball into the SDSU side of the field, but the Jackrabbits prevented Weber State from adding another tally on the scoreboard. South Dakota State goalkeeper Mallorie Benhart made five saves in the second half as the Jackrabbits completed the 3-2 win.

The Jackrabbits improved to 5-1-1 this season in the win. Weber State dropped to 3-3-1.

NOTES

South Dakota State outshot Weber State 11-9 in the match. The Jacks are now 2-0-1 all-time against the Wildcats.
Maloy is now up to a team-high 10 points behind her five goals. Following her is Bosch who has nine points this season with two goals and five assists. Brezenski is up to seven points after scoring in her second straight match.
Williams played the full 90 minutes as a part of SDSU's defense. The Jacks also received 70-plus minute efforts from Bosch, Maloy, Stella Braddock and Hannah Langstaff. Abbi Gibbs led SDSU's reserves by playing 62 minutes on the pitch.

South Dakota State completes its non-conference portion of its schedule on Sunday. The Jackrabbits are slated to take on Utah State at 2 p.m. CT in Logan.
