South Dakota State women's soccer scored early and hung on late in a 1-0 win over Northern Iowa Friday evening at Fishback Soccer Park.
Â
The Jackrabbits (4-3) fired out of the gates to take control in the opening moments of action, breaking through at 15:22 as
Marisa Schulz netted her first goal of the 2018 campaign.
Annie Williams assisted on the play, firing a ball that looked to be on track for UNI's keeper, but Schulz stepped in front of it and deflected it into the goal.
Â
State kept up the pressure the rest of the half but were held to the lone goal, heading to the locker room with an 11-3 advantage in shots.
Â
Out of the break, the Jacks found themselves in a back-and-forth final 45 minutes with a resurrected UNI offense, facing significant pressure throughout the period. Both teams used counter attacks to fuel scoring opportunities, but defenses on either side held firm in the 1-0 Jackrabbit win.
Â
"Coming into this game we talked about starting with the right mindset, and I was really pleased how we came out at the opening whistle," head coach
Brock Thompson said. "I thought we had great energy, played with great enthusiasm, and I really thought we were able to play the best half of soccer we've played this season in the first half.
Â
"I thought throughout the game our back line did a really good job of dealing with UNI's dangerous attacking players, and then being able to start the attack, and our team responded."
Â
Williams fired a team-high four shots (three on goal) in the game while Schulz and
Allie Zueger each had three attempts, including an attack from Zueger in the 72nd that deflected off the post.
Bianca Madonia had another near-miss for SDSU, as her shot in the 82nd was tipped over the crossbar.
Â
Maggie Smither played all 90 minutes between the pipes and recorded six saves in her third shutout of the season.
