The South Dakota State University equestrian team returns to action Friday, hosting UT Martin in head-to-head competition.

The meet is scheduled for an 8 a.m. start at the DeHaan Equestrian Center. Live video coverage will be available through the Jackrabbits All-Access media portal at GoJacks.com.

Friday's competition will be the second of the season for the Jackrabbits, who dropped a three-point decision to Texas A&M in the Sept. 25 season opener.

UT Martin enters the meet with a 1-2 record in head-to-head competitions this season. After falling to Baylor and Delaware State to open the 2021-22 campaign, the Skyhawks knocked off third-ranked and defending national champion SMU, 9-6, on Oct. 2.

RECAP VERSUS TEXAS A&M: Texas A&M won four of the five reining matchups to pull out an 11.5-8.5 victory over South Dakota State in season-opening competition Sept. 25 at the DeHaan Equestrian Center.

The Aggies and Jackrabbits went into the final event tied at 7.5 points. After splitting the first two reining matchups, Texas A&M secured the team victory with consecutive wins by Malena Lopez, Taylor Masson and Lisa Bricker.

SDSU fared well in the jumping seat events, holding 3-2 advantages in both equitation over fences and equitation on the flat. In fences, Margaret Franke was the Most Outstanding Performer with a score of 82 on Elliot, while Cali Karbler (79) and Rachel Darby (78) added individual wins.

Rachel Head on Sootar and Hannah Steele aboard Enrique shared MOP honors for the Jackrabbits in equitation on the flat with scores of 83. Julia Werkhoven picked up the other point for SDSU the event with a score of 78.5 on Fendi.

Texas A&M held the upper hand in the Western events thanks in part to a 3.5-1.5 edge in horsemanship. Annika Hanson picked up a point for the Jackrabbits with a 71.5-point ride on Hooch, while Grace Blake tied with the Aggies' Cori Cansdale with a score of 76.5 on George.

Amelia Nelson picked up the lone point for the Jackrabbits in reining with a score of 74.5.

NEW LEADERSHIP: South Dakota State entered the 2021-22 equestrian season under new leadership as a pair of former Jackrabbit student-athletes were hired to complete the coaching staff. Jessica Andronowitz coaches the jumping seat squad while Jordan Gates mentors the Western riders.

Andronowitz competed for the Jackrabbits from 2014-17 and served was selected as a team captain during her senior season. She has served as a professional equine trainer for the past two years and is a member of the United States Equestrian Federation and U.S. Hunter Jumper Association.

Gates served as a volunteer assistant Western coach for the Jackrabbits during the 2020-21 season, following a collegiate career at SDSU in which she competed in horsemanship for four years and reining for two seasons. A team captain during the 2018-19 campaign, she earned all-United Equestrian honors in horsemanship and was selected as Western team MVP.

UP NEXT
The Jackrabbits are slated to host a two-day meet Oct. 28-29 against Texas Christian and Minnesota-Crookston. Competition is set for 8 a.m. each day.
