BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State outshot Drake 22-3 in a non-conference match at Fishback Soccer Park on Sunday, but the Jackrabbits were unable to pull away from the Bulldogs as the two sides played to a 1-1 tie.Â
Â
The Jacks (4-0-2) were on the attack for a majority of the contest as SDSU jumped out to a 13-1 edge in shots in the first half. The Jackrabbits forced Bulldog goalkeeper Vianey Lopez to make seven saves in the opening 45 minutes, yet it would be Drake that got on the scoreboard first.Â
Â
The second half opened and less than five minutes in Drake's attack put together two of its three shots on the night. Another opportunity for the Bulldogs presented itself and a Drake crossing pass into the box was kicked in by an SDSU defender, leading to an own goal by the Jacks and a 1-0 lead for the visitors in the 50th minute.Â
Â
SDSU responded quickly.Â
Â
Karlee Manding took a corner kick for the Jackrabbits and found
Reagan Anderson who squared up a header that made its way into the back of the net to tie the score up at 1-1 in the 53rd minute.Â
Â
"We always say next five," Anderson said. "Five minutes after we get scored on, that should be our best time to get back into the game.Â
Â
"We work on corner kicks and set pieces every practice, so it was nice to see that go in."
Â
The two foes continued to compete over the near 40-minute span and the stretch saw nine yellow cards handed out between the Bulldogs and Jackrabbits. SDSU had two corner kicks and a shot go off target over the final five minutes of action before the clock ran out.Â
Â
"I just felt like today's game there were some inconsistencies in the transition moments that cost us a little bit," SDSU head coach
Brock Thompson said. "It cost us the goal that put them up 1-0, but I'm proud of the way we responded from that. This part of the year for us is all about getting better. That's what we'll use this game as."
Â
Notes
The Jackrabbits remain undefeated this season with the draw. SDSU also improved on its unbeaten streak during regular season matches at Fishback Soccer Park extending the streak to 34. Anderson's goal was her second of the season which is a new career high.
Katherine Jones,
Kayla Anderson and
Abigail Kastens shared a team lead for the Jacks with four shots apiece. The no shots allowed on goal given up by SDSU is a first for the program since Sept. 22, 2019, when the Jackrabbits completed the feat against Northern Illinois. Drake's Lopez eventually finished with nine saves. The Bulldogs claimed their first tie on the year and are now 1-4-1.Â
