Brookings, S.D. - The Jackrabbit wrestling program is on the road this weekend for their first away dual of the season against No. 14 (NWCA) Northern Iowa. It's a top 15 battle in the Big 12 as the Jacks are ranked in the NWCA Coaches Poll at No. 13. Northern Iowa leads the all-time dual series, 40-6-1, but the Jackrabbits have won two of the last three matchups. The dual should feature five ranked duals based on the projected lineups with the featured match set to be held at 184 pounds between No. 4 Bennett Berge and No. 2 Parker Keckeisen, who have never faced each other in their college careers.

Augustana, NWCA All-Star Classic and Daktronics Invitational Recap
Augustana
The South Dakota State wrestling team scored their first win at First Bank & Trust Arena as they took down Augustana on Friday night. SDSU scored bonus points in all but one of their matches as they shut out the Vikings 49-0.
The Jacks were without two of their returning All-Americans as Tanner Jordan and Cade DeVos prepared to compete in the NWCA All-Star Classic on Saturday. Brady Roark stepped in for Tanner Jordan at 125 pounds against the Vikings.
Roark got off to a slow start, allowing an early takedown from Augustana's Jaxson Rohman, but battled back in the second and third periods, scoring two takedowns and earning the riding time point, grabbing a 9-5 win over Rohman.
Derrick Cardinal started for the Jacks at 133 pounds against Augustana's Owen Hansen. Cardinal scored a takedown in the early minutes of the match and didn't look back, pinning Hansen in 1:36. The junior from Forest Lake, Minn., goes into the record books scoring the first pin inside of First Bank & Trust Arena.
Avery Allen made his dual debut for the Jackrabbits at 141 pounds against Connor Whiteley. The redshirt freshman scored two takedowns in the first period and would ride out the rest of the match, earning a major decision 13-4.
Colin Dupil, a redshirt freshman from Greeneville, Tenn., stepped up to the mat for the Jacks at 149 pounds. He would score two takedowns in two periods and unload in period three as he earned a technical fall win over Alex Mentzer.
Cobe Siebrecht made his Jackrabbit debut in the final match before the intermission. The transfer from Iowa would make his presence felt inside First Bank & Trust Arena, scoring three takedowns before pinning Logan Butzon at 4:14. This was Siebrecht's first dual competition since the 2022-23 season when he competed at Iowa. Going into the intermission the Jacks lead, 24-0.
Drake Rhodes got the start for SDSU at 165 pounds, going up against Augustana's Payton Handevidt. Rhodes grabbed two takedowns at the end of the first two periods and then caught fire in the third, landing three takedowns and securing the riding time point as he got his first win as a Jackrabbit, a technical fall victory, 18-3.
Marcus Espinoza-Owens went up a weight class to fill in for Cade DeVos at 174 pounds. The redshirt freshman scored six takedowns in the match and secured a technical fall victory, 22-7, over Payton Anderson.
Returning All-American Bennett Berge stepped back onto the mat for the first time since finishing fourth at the NCAA Tournament in 2024. He showed no signs of ring rust as he shutout Gavin Gulbranson, 17-0, earning the technical fall victory.
At 197 pounds, Zach Glazier made his SDSU debut. The sixth-year senior from Albert Lea, Minn., landed five takedowns and secured the riding time point as he dominated his first match as a Jackrabbit.Luke Rasmussen finished the night out for the Jackrabbits, scoring a takedown and three near falls to secure the technical fall win over Max Balow of Augustana, 16-0.
NWCA All-Star Classic
Tanner Jordan and Cade DeVos competed at the NWCA All-Star Classic on Saturday.
The NWCA All-Star Classic is an exhibition event at Rec Hall on the campus of Penn State in State College, Pa. The event featured five women's and 11 men's matches between highly ranked competitors.
DeVos faced off against Levi Haines, who was making his debut at 174 pounds. DeVos was called for stalling early in the match and was down 0-2 heading to the third period. DeVos nearly scored a reversal after being on the bottom to start the third but couldn't quite pull it off, allowing Haines to score four near-fall points at the end, dropping the match 7-0.
Jordan stepped up to the mat to face Jore Volk for the fifth time in his collegiate career at 125 pounds. The senior from St. Paris, Ohio, struggled to gain footing and ultimately dropped the match, 8-2, after Volk scored two takedowns late in periods one and three.
Daktronics Invitational
The South Dakota State wrestling team finished their weekend by hosting the Warren Williamson Daktronics Invitational.
Drake Rhodes continued his hot start to life as a Jackrabbit, going 3-0 on the day at 165, with all three wins coming with bonus points.
Brady Roark competed at 125 pounds, starting his day off going against the No.1 125-pound wrestler in the country Richard Figueroa. Roark would land one takedown before an injury timeout for Figueroa, and another after the injury timeout before Figueroa defaulted due to a leg injury. Roark also picked up a win over #31 Antonio Lorenzo, grinding out a 1-0 win with an escape.
Freshman Cale Seaton scored three decision wins on his way to a 3-0 day at the Invitational. Derrick Cardinal put on an entertaining display at the Invitational, scoring a tech fall and two major decisions, going 3-0 on the day.
Avery Allen rallied back after a loss to Arizona State's Daniel Miranda, scoring a major decision against NDSU's Michael Olson in his final match.
Marcus Espinoza-Owens wrestled at 165 pounds after moving up to 174 for the dual against Augustana. Espinoza-Owens went 4-0 on the day with two major decisions: a tech fall and a decision win.
Bennett Berge went 3-0 at the Invitational, scoring a tech fall and two decision wins, including a decision win over Oklahoma's #26 DJ Parker, 9-3.
The Jacks put up a strong showing at 197 pounds as Zach Glazier and Thomas Dineen went 3-0 for the day. Glazier scored three tech falls on the day and Dineen scored a pin and two major decisions, including a major decision win over #24 Bradley Hill from Oklahoma.

The South Dakota State Jackrabbit Wrestling program is looking to capitalize on a successful 2023-24 season as they return to action in 2024-25 under head coach Damion Hahn.
The return of three All-Americans highlights the squad: Tanner Jordan (125), Cade DeVos (174), and Bennett Berge (184). They return alongside NCAA qualifiers Derrick Cardinal (133), Alek Martin (149), and Cael Swensen (157).
SDSU returns to the mat in 2024-25 after finishing third in the Big 12 Championships and 13th at the NCAA Championships in 2023-24. The Big 12 Championships were highlighted by the crowning of Cade DeVos (174) and Tanner Sloan (197) as champions in their respective weight classes.
The Jacks are coming off a season in 2023-24 where they had a program-record four All-Americans and a program-record-tying eight NCAA Qualifiers. The Jacks went 13-4 in dual meets and 7-2 in conference duals. This is highlighted by a 7-1 home record for South Dakota St. with wins over Air Force and Wyoming.
SDSU is full of new faces, as the program brought in 12 newcomers in the offseason. Six of the newcomers are freshmen. This includes Burk Blasius, Kenton Cooke, Shane McConville, Logan Swensen, Tyson Peach, and Quin Morgan. Sophomore Jacob Fistler wrestled with the JWC last year but has now been added to the 2024-25 squad.
In September, the Jackrabbits announced the addition of four transfers from the University of Iowa. Those include Zach Glazier, Cobe Siebrecht, Cade Siebrecht and Drake Rhodes.
Glazier was the runner-up at 197 pounds at the Big 10 Championships for Iowa in 2023-24. He put together a 37-9 record over 4 years with Iowa, including a 9-4 record against ranked opponents in 2023-24.
Cobe Siebrecht sat out of competition in 2023-24, but in 2022-23, Siebrecht was an NCAA Qualifier at 157 pounds and finished seventh at the Big 10 Championships. He put together a 21-11 record over three years of competition at Iowa.
The Jacks are led by head coach Damion Hahn, who is in his seventh year at the helm of SDSU. Hahn holds a record of 58-34 overall and a Big 12 dual record of 28-21. The 2023-24 season was his best mark by far as the leader of the Jackrabbit wrestling program, as the team went 13-4 in duals. SDSU received their highest preseason ranking from InterMat under Hahn as they are ranked No. 9 to start the season, and are No. 10 and No. 12 in the FloWrestling and NWCA Coaches polls, respectively. He is joined by Cam Simaz, Cody Caldwell, and Clay Carlson as his assistant coaches.
Key Storylines
The New: South Dakota State added four transfers in September from the University of Iowa: Zach Glazier, Cobe and Cade Siebrecht and Drake Rhodes. The transfers come in alongside six freshmen.

Program Records: The Jacks brought home a program record four All-Americans in 2023-24 with Tanner Jordan, Cade DeVos, Bennett Berge and Tanner Sloan. The Jacks tied their program record of eight NCAA Qualifiers by sending Cardinal, Martin, Swensen and Clay Carlson.
Experience Matters: The projected starting lineup for the Jackrabbits this year includes five athletes in their sixth year of collegiate eligibility. Amongst those five athletes, they total eight NCAA Qualifications, 1 Big 12 Title and two All-American honors.
In the Rankings: SDSU is ranked No. 13 in the NWCA Coaches Poll this week. They dropped down one spot from No. 12 the previous two weeks. The Jackrabbits are ranked No. 8 in InterMat's tournament rankings and No. 9 in FloWrestling.
Home Mat Advantage: The Jackrabbits put up a home record in 2023-24 of 7-1. Their only loss came to fellow ranked program Missouri, only losing the dual 19-21. SDSU scored over 30 points in six of their eight home duals.
In the Classroom: The SDSU wrestling program had the fourth-highest team GPA in the country amongst wrestling programs last year, according to NWCA. The Jackrabbits compiled a 3.5416 team grade-point average to receive the team recognition for the fourth season and were the highest-ranking Big 12 Conference school.
New Staff, Old Faces: Two-Time All-American Clay Carlson was added to the wrestling coaching staff in the offseason as an assistant coach. Carlson wrestled at SDSU for six years and was a four-time NCAA qualifier, two-time All-American and two-time Big 12 Wrestling scholar athlete of the year. Brady Berge was also promoted from volunteer assistant coach to the head coach of the JWC regional training center.
Individual Rankings: The Jacks have a wrestler ranked in nine of 10 weight classes as we hit week four of the college wrestling season. Drake Rhodes and Luke Rasmussen have been the biggest movers, going from unranked in the pre-season to ranked in both polls as of week four.
Offseason work: Cael Swensen finished second at the U23 National Duals in Geneva, Ohio, over the summer in the 74-kilogram division. Fellow Jackrabbits Marcus Espinoza Owens, Kail Wynia, Thomas Dineen, Derrick Cardinal and Brock Fettig competed at the event, with Wynia and Dineen placing fourth in their respective divisions.
A Look Ahead
The next event for the Jacks is their home dual against Minnesota on Dec. 1st. The match will occur at First Bank & Trust Arena at 2 p.m. The Jacks will look to avenge their close loss to the Gophers from last year as head coach Damion Hahn takes on his alma mater, where he won two NCAA Championships.
