BROOKINGS, S.D. - After dropping four of the first five matches, the Jacks comeback attempt in the second half of the match fell short as they dropped the dual with Iowa State, 20-15.
The dual started with Tanner Jordan at 125 pounds taking on Ethan Perryman. After a scoreless first, Jordan was able to score a takedown in the second, securing a 6-3 decision and putting the Jacks on the board first.
No. 28 Derrick Cardinal stepped up against No. 5 Evan Frost at 133 pounds. Frost scored takedowns in the first, second and third periods on his way to an 11-3 major decision, catapulting the Cyclones into the lead, 4-3.
Filling in for Julian Tagg at 141 pounds was Logan Swensen. Swensen made his dual debut against No. 9 Jacob Frost. After a scoreless first, Frost put on the pressure, scoring two takedowns before securing a pin and six points for the Cyclones, putting them up 10-3.
At 149 pounds, Colin Dupill stepped up against No. 6 Paniro Johnson. Johnson got off to a quick start with two takedowns in the first, followed by two more in the second on his way to a 14-4 major decision win.
No. 17 Cobe Siebrecht took on No. 10 Cody Chittum at 157 pounds. Siebrecht got off to a hot start with a takedown in the first, going up 3-1 heading into the second. Chittum fired back with a takedown of his own to take a 5-4 lead into the third. Siebrecht gained the lead back on an escape and a penalty for Chittum before Chittum landed another takedown. Siebrecht mounted a comeback but fell just short, falling 9-8 by ride time.
At 165 pounds, former Iowa teammates No. 10 Drake Rhodes and Aiden Riggins faced off. Riggins was able to get on the board first, securing a takedown, but Rhodes fired off multiple shots, finally landing in the third with a late takedown to secure a 5-4 win over Riggins and get the Jacks back in the win column.
At 174 pounds, No. 10 Cade DeVos took on No. 25 MJ Gaitan. DeVos scored first, grabbing a takedown in the first period and followed it up with a reversal in the second. He would score another reversal in the third and take home an 8-4 decision over Gaitan.
At 184 pounds, No. 5 Bennett Berge took on No. 14 Evan Bockman. Not much separated the two through two periods but a late takedown by Berge secured the decision for the Jacks, 6-2 and moved the dual score to 12-17.
At 197 pounds, No. 15 Zach Glazier took on Nate Schon. Glazier's offense was in full force, scoring two takedowns in the first two periods and scoring a reversal in the third to take home a 10-6 decision.
It would come down to heavyweights at First Bank & Trust as Luke Rasmussen took on Daniel Herrera. Rasmussen came out strong with five first-period points on a takedown and a near fall. Herrera answered with a takedown in the second to cut the lead to 6-3. With Rasmussen on top to start the third, Herrera scored a reversal and takedown to steal the match from Rasmussen, 8-7 and give the Cyclones the win.
