BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State heads to Ashland, Neb., to compete in the Summit League Cross Country Championships on Saturday afternoon.
HEAD COACH ROD DEHAVEN
"This is an exciting time in the season. Both squads are revved up and excited for the opportunity to compete in the championships. We are looking to putting together the most complete races, which will hopefully put us in the mix."
THE MEET
The Summit League Cross Country Championships will take place on Nov. 1 in Ashland, Neb., at Mahoney State Park. The men's 8K will kick off at 11:00 a.m., followed by the women's 6K at 12:00 p.m.. The Jackrabbit men will attempt to achieve a 10-year conference championship streak, while the women's team will look to take the conference title in back-to-back years.
The USTFCCCA released its regional rankings ahead of the conference championship with four Summit League teams finding a spot on the list. On the men's side, South Dakota State was ranked the highest at 11th, closely followed by North Dakota in 12th, North Dakota State in 13th, and Oral Roberts at 15th. On the women's side, the Jackrabbits were ranked 13th between North Dakota in seventh and NDSU in 14th, providing fierce competition for both teams to contend with for the Summit Legue title.
ATHLETES TO WATCH
Cody Larson will be the Jackrabbit to watch this weekend as the senior will look to win the men's 8K race. Larson will be challenged by last year's Summit League Champion, Abraham Chelangam of Oral Roberts. Despite going up against the previous year's champion, Larson bested Chelangam's PR of 23:29.3 a couple of weeks ago at the Pre-Nationals meet when he finished eighth with a new personal record of 23:17.9. Earlier in the season, Larson took silver at 24:56.4, sandwiched between a pair of track and field All-Americans from Wyoming at the Roy Griak competition.
Cashton Johnson has made incredible strides this year and is slated to finish second for the Jackrabbits this weekend. Johnson will be making his cross country conference meet debut this year after an impressive showing at the Roy Griak and Pre-Nationals earlier in the season. The redshirt sophomore took 14th at the Griak with a time of 25:33.9, before placing 62nd at Pre-Nationals with a personal record 8K time of 24:18.2.
Meghan Ford will look to lead the women's team at the conference championship. At last year's conference meet, Ford collapsed across the finish line in seventh with a time of 21:05.2, only 15 seconds behind her personal record at the time. This year, Ford opened her season a couple of weeks ago at the Pre-Nationals Invitational in Columbia, Mo. Ford clocked a new personal record of 20:27.2 to place 38th among the best runners in the Midwest.
Courtney Stadter will look to lead the Jackrabbits alongside Ford. Last year, Stadter stepped up to lead SDSU while Ford struggled with an ongoing injury. Stadter finished in third to help the women's team win the championship title. This year, Stadter has seen a couple of promising runs at the Roy Griak and Pre-Nationals meets. The sophomore clocked a 6K time of 22:59.7 to place 35th at the Griak before finishing at 21:38.6 at the Pre-Nationals Invitational.
