South Dakota State hosts its home opener on Thursday when the Jackrabbits welcome Dakota State inside First Bank & Trust Arena for a 7 p.m. matchup. The Jacks are coming off a season-opening 75-66 victory over Merrimack on Monday in Sioux Falls.Â
Jaden Jackson sparked SDSU with a career-high 23 points in the win over the Warriors. He scored 17 in the first half to pace the Jacks to a 38-33 halftime lead. After seeing a nine-point lead at the start of the second half slip away and the Jacks got behind by five points, a 9-0 scoring run boosted SDSU ahead for good. The Jackrabbits are now 11-8 all-time in the Sanford Pentagon having won their last five appearances in the facility.
Another standout individual effort came from senior
Matthew Mors. His 16-point performance was his highest output since his freshman season and second most of his career. He also matched his career best single-game marks in rebounds (9), steals (3) and blocks (2).Â
Head coach
Bryan Petersen claimed his first victory guiding the Jackrabbits. In his debut as a head coach at the Division I level, SDSU recorded solid shooting percentages of 42.1% from the field, 38.8% from deep and 76.9% at the free throw line. SDSU assisted on 17 of 24 field goals. The assist total would have been the fourth highest total against a DI opponent a season ago. As a team, the Jackrabbits outrebounded Merrimack 44-31 and held the Warriors to 32.1% shooting.
South Dakota State makes it season-debut in its home confines. The Jackrabbits went 13-1 in their opening season inside First Bank & Trust Arena. SDSU continues to be one of the best programs in men's basketball at home. Since the 2015-16 season, the Jacks rank second in win percentage at home (.927) trailing only Gonzaga (.929). The Jackrabbits' 176-13 record at home since 2011-12 trails in win percentage to Kansas (.938) and Gonzaga (.936).
SDSU is 24-4 all-time against Dakota State and 4-0 in its DI era versus the Trojans. Dakota State is 3-0 so far to open 2025-26. The Trojans are guided by first-year coach Kevin Williamson. Nathan Ojukwu leads Dakota State in multiple categories including points (17.7) and rebounds (11.7).
