The South Dakota State soccer program's record holder in scoring in Maya Hansen has signed her first contract becoming the seventh former Jackrabbit to play at the professional level. Hansen signed with Fimleikafelag Hafnarfjardar, referred to as FH, which is located in Hafnarfjardar, Iceland.
FH plays in the top-tier women's league in Iceland. The 10-team league is known as the Besta deild kevenna and has its champion qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Hansen was a standout for the Jackrabbits from 2019-23. Hansen was a four-time All-Summit League performer, the 2019 Summit League Freshman of the Year and 2022 Offensive Player of the Year, as well as a two-time United Soccer Coaches All-Region honoree. The former SDSU forward is the program record holder in goals (44) and points (107) as she helped lead the Jackrabbits to a pair of Summit League Tournament titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances.Â
The Savage, Minn., native ranks atop the South Dakota State program career charts in shots on goal (96), game-winning goals (18) and games started (81), as well as third in assists (19), fourth in shots (200) and eighth in games played (85).Â
Hansen, a two-year captain for the Jackrabbit program, graduated from South Dakota State University with her bachelor's degree. Her 2023 season ended with a medical redshirt and she used the 2024 season as a graduate student at Iowa. Hansen's arrival at FH will re-join her with 2023 SDSU teammate Birna Bjornsdottir. The Iceland native, who was a letterwinner on SDSU's 2023 NCAA Tournament team, signed with FH ahead of its 2024 campaign.Â
