BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State opens its season with a trio of meets, beginning with the Wash U Distance Carnival on Thursday, and ending with the Texas Relays and Bobcat Invite on Saturday evening.
HEAD COACH ROD DEHAVEN
"With a new season, there is new excitement. The Jackrabbits are getting a great opportunity to open the season against some top-flight competition. The Texas Relays is a marquee track and field event with some of the best in collegiate track and field attending. The events at Wash U and Texas State will also provide great competition. We expect that we will have some great opening season marks."
The Wash U Distance Carnival, hosted by Washington University in St. Louis, will run several heats of distance events, beginning with the fastest heats of each event on Thursday and finishing with the remaining heats all day Friday. The meet will be held at Francis Olympic Field in St. Louis, Mo.
The Jackrabbit squad will overlap the Wash U Distance Carnival with the 97th annual Texas Relays on Friday, with the meet continuing into Saturday. The Jackrabbits will be competing against top competition in the nation at Mike A. Meyers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
SDSU will wrap up its first week of competition at the Bobcat Invitational, hosted by Texas State University. The Jackrabbits will only attend one day of competition on Saturday, March 29th, at the Texas State Track and Field Complex.
ATHLETES TO WATCH
James Pierce will be one to watch this season as the sophomore was the Summit League Outdoor Track and Field 400-meter champion in his first year of collegiate competition. Pierce also clutched gold in the 400-meter during the conference championship this past indoor season and assisted the men's 4X400-meter relay team to a new program record.
Hunter Wallster will be returning this year as the former hammer throw champion of last year's outdoor conference championship. This past indoor track season, the senior clutched gold in the weight throw with a personal record of 68-00.05 (20.74m) and will undoubtedly be interesting to watch in his final run as a Jackrabbit.
Brielle Dixon will be one to keep an eye on this year as the senior enters the outdoor season as a former all-league finisher in the 100-hurdles and an NCAA West First Round qualifier. Along with her successful run last season, Dixon turned heads throughout this past indoor season as she steadily improved her 60-hurdle time, resulting in an 8.16 60-hurdle personal record, a top-25 time in the nation. Dixon clocked her record at the Summit League Indoor Conference Championship, where she won the event and set a new meet record.
Nora Peterson will be back in action for outdoor track and field. Peterson last competed at the NCAA West First Round, where she tied her personal record of 156-04.00 (47.66m) to take 29th. Prior to this, Peterson clutched silver in the conference championship and will likely be on the hunt for gold come conference championships.
