KANSAS CITY, Mo. – South Dakota State pitcher
Sylvia Shromoff threw her first-career complete game and did so in shutout fashion as the Jackrabbits defeated Kansas City, 5-0, at the Kansas City Urban Youth Academy field on Saturday.Â
Â
Shromoff pitched 1-2-3 frames across the first two innings. She kept the Roos at bay as the Jackrabbits worked to plate the first run of the game.Â
Â
SDSU went up 1-0 in the top of the third.
Mia Jarecki was scored on an RBI single by
Brooke Dumont to put the Jackrabbits ahead.Â
Â
Kansas City recorded hits in the third and fifth innings, but Shromoff continued to work through the Roos lineup. Neither team advanced a runner to third again until the seventh inning.Â
Â
Jarecki and
Akayla Barnard hit back-to-back singles to open the frame. A one-out walk to
Abby Gentry loaded the bases for the Jackrabbits. Senior
Alli Boyle came up and ripped an RBI single to right field. An error in the outfield allowed three Jacks to cross home to extend the SDSU lead to 4-0. An RBI ground out by
Emma Vike gave the Jackrabbits more insurance and made it 5-0.Â
Â
Shromoff put the finishing touches on a career outing in the seventh. She struck out two straight batters and forced a ground out to round out the performance.
Â
SDSU's freshman pitcher, making the second start of her college career, allowed just two hits in the victory to improve to 2-1. Shromoff struck out five batters and allowed one walk across seven innings in the winning effort.
Â
Dumont and
Emma Christensen each registered two hits for the Jackrabbits. Jarecki scored two runs.Â
