South Dakota State is back on the road for Summit League play this weekend as the Jackrabbits head to St. Paul for a three-game series at St. Thomas. The series features a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday at the Tommies' South Field, followed by a single game at 11 a.m. Sunday.
SDSU hosted its inaugural series at its transformed home facility, Jerald T. Moriarty Field, last weekend in Brookings against South Dakota. After falling in the opening game of the Interstate Series, presented by First Interstate Bank by a 9-5 score, the Jacks rebounded. SDSU won the second game 8-5 then a walk-off single by
Madi Conklin provided the Jackrabbits a series victory behind a 4-3 win.Â
The Jacks are currently 20-18 overall and sit atop The Summit League standings with a 5-1 record. SDSU makes a trip into Minnesota to face the Tommies who are 19-15 overall and 4-2 in conference action. St. Thomas has won both its conference series at Omaha and South Dakota. The Tommies are coming off a four-game stretch on the road with two defeats in Oklahoma and a doubleheader sweep at Wisconsin on Tuesday. The series will be the first home games for St. Thomas this season.Â
SDSU is 8-2 all-time against St. Thomas but has won all eight meetings between the two sides as Summit League foes. In SDSU's first games ever at South Field two seasons ago, the Jackrabbits earned a series sweep by claiming victories by the score of 2-0, 4-1 and 8-0.
Abby Gentry continues to sit atop the Jackrabbits' hitting chart through 38 games. The sophomore third baseman leads SDSU in home runs (7), RBIs (39), hits (44) and batting average (.423). Her RBI and batting average marks, along with her slugging percentage (.755), rank atop the Summit League.Â
Four other Jacks that are currently part of the everyday lineup that hit over .300 include
Brooke Dumont (.398),
Emma Christensen (.380),
Emma Vike (.368) and
Mia Jarecki (.314). Dumont and Jarecki have several marks that rank on SDSU's career top 10 lists.
SDSU's pitching staff has a combined 4.30 ERA through 244 innings thrown in 38 games. Four pitchers have thrown over 30 innings for the Jackrabbits.
Amanda Vacanti leads that group in ERA (3.55) while she's followed by
Madi Mangulis (4.13),
Akayla Barnard (4.24) and
Tayler Baker (4.25). Through six conference games the pitching staff has accumulated a 2.83 ERA.
Sylvia Shromoff has appeared in three games, making two starts, and put together a 1.87 ERA across 15 innings thrown. Baker earned a win in SDSU's finale versus South Dakota pitching four innings in relief while giving up one run on one hit.
