BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota scored four runs in the first inning which ultimately proved to be the difference in a 9-5 victory over South Dakota State on Saturday, April 5, at Jerald T. Moriarty Field. The meeting served as the first game for the Jackrabbit softball team on its new turf playing surface at its home facility. Â
Â
Three of the first five Coyote batters recorded hits, which to go along with a walk, led to the first four runs of the game. A two-run home run forced South Dakota State to go to reliever
Sylvia Shromoff.Â
Â
SDSU cut the deficit to 4-3 with a three-run third inning.
Emma Christensen reached base on an error and
Mia Jarecki hit a double to put two Jacks on base and in scoring position.
Akayla Barnard ripped a single up the middle to plate two runs. State added a run to its tally on a fielder's choice to close the frame.Â
Â
Shromoff threw four consecutive shutout innings for the Jackrabbits before falling into trouble in the sixth. A two-run double for South Dakota with one out eventually chased Shromoff from the contest.
Â
The Jackrabbits cut the score to 6-4 in the bottom of the inning when
Emma Vike hit a solo home run.Â
Â
South Dakota put the game out of reach in the seventh. The Yotes produced three runs on three hits in the frame.
Akayla Barnard hit an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh, but it's all the Jackrabbits could put together as the Yotes closed out the victory.Â
