South Dakota State makes its home debut on Friday when the Jackrabbits take on Southwest Minnesota State at 7 p.m. at Fishback Soccer Park. SDSU follows the match against the Mustangs with a road trip that features three games in Hawaii.
The Jackrabbits opened the season by drawing Mizzou in the opener last Thursday, 1-1, thanks to a 79th minute goal by
Hailee Christensen.
Mia Bosch was credited with an assist in the Jacks' first matchup ever against the Tigers. SDSU then fell to Kansas, 1-0, on Sunday. The Jayhawks scored a 58th minute goal en route to a win. Jackrabbit keeper
Mallorie Benhart had five saves in the loss, which included one on a penalty kick.
Benhart was selected as the Kwik Trip Summit League Defensive Peak Performer of the Week on Tuesday. She played both matches at goalkeeper for SDSU and has a .750 save percentage and 1.00 goals against average.Â
Defenders
Lauren Eckerle and
Taylor Thomas each have played 167 minutes for a Jackrabbit back line that allowed a goal apiece to Mizzou of the SEC and Kansas of the Big 12. Christensen, along with midfielder
Taryn Hettich, have also played over 160 combined minutes to begin the campaign.Â
Multiple Jackrabbits have made their Division I soccer opening appearances this season. Freshmen in
Jenna Maloy,
Emma Brezenski,
MaKynlie Cade and
Brianna Finnegan made their collegiate debuts last weekend.
Lauren Walter and
Renny Buchanan made their first showings as Jackrabbits last week, having transferred from the NAIA level, as well as
Hannah Langstaff who previously played at Akron.
SDSU faces SMSU on Friday for the first time in over two decades. The two sides, located roughly one hour apart, haven't faced off since the Jackrabbits' Division II days. State is 3-1 all-time against SMSU with the lone loss in the Jackrabbit program's inaugural 2000 season.
The Jackrabbits head to the Aloha State for the second time ever next week. SDSU previously traveled to Hawaii for a trio of matches in the 2021 season. That season saw SDSU beat Idaho State (6-0), Hawaii (1-0) and Hawaii Pacific (4-0) on the trip.Â
