BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State's annual Goald Game featured a slew of dramatics on Sunday as the Jackrabbits eventually overwhelmed Northern Colorado, 6-3, at Fishback Soccer Park.Â
Â
The Jacks and Bears recorded a shot apiece in the opening 13 minutes before the hosts got on the board first.Â
Â
Ellie Gusman passed back to
Lauren Eckerle who sent a deep ball into the box over the Northern Colorado back line. Her pass found
Zoe Wittkop who easily booted a left-footed shot into the back of the net to put SDSU ahead, 1-0.Â
Â
Northern Colorado responded in the 32nd minute. The Bears' Preslie Young dribbled her way through the Jackrabbit defense and produced a short strike just in front of the goal to tie the score at 1-1.Â
Â
With one second remaining before the clock turned over into the 43rd minute, the match was halted due to a lightning delay. The teams came back out to the pitch after an over hour duration as a period of pouring rain passed over the region. Â
Â
The teams' return to the field had an eventful three minutes that remained on the first-half clock.Â
Â
SDSU's
Emma Brezenski put the Jackrabbits on the board again with a right-footed boot from outside the box in the 43rd minute. Less than two minutes later, with the clock featuring under a minute to play, the Bears' Jolee Irvin struck a shot from nearly 40 yards out into the top shelf of the goal to tie the score at halftime.Â
Â
The meeting turned in favor of the Jackrabbits in the 52nd minute. An SDSU pass found its way past the Bears' defense and got to the feet of sophomore
Mia Bosch. She was tripped just outside the box and play was momentarily stopped as a resulting card was discussed. Following video review, Northern Colorado was handed a red card and the Bears' lineup was cut down to 10 players.Â
Â
A minute later saw SDSU go ahead for good as Bosch booted in a goal on an assist from Wittkop.Â
Â
MaKynlie Cade scored in the 60th minute,
Abria Brooker notched a goal in the 80th minute and
Lauren Walter found the back of the net in the 82nd minute to close out the Jackrabbits' scoring. Northern Colorado followed with a penalty kick to close out the final tally. Â
Â
South Dakota State extended its unbeaten streak to seven matches and improved to 5-1-3. Northern Colorado dropped to 1-5-3.Â
