South Dakota State makes its home debut this weekend as the Jackrabbits take on North Dakota at Jerald T. Moriarty Field. The Jacks and Fighting Hawks play a three-game series in Brookings beginning with a 1 p.m. meeting on Saturday. The two sides will then compete at 1 p.m. Sunday and 2:30 p.m. Monday.
SDSU opened its Summit League schedule last weekend with a three-game set at South Dakota. The Jacks won the first two games of the series by 4-0 and 9-0 scores courtesy of complete-game shutouts by pitchers
Madi Mangulis and
Akayla Barnard. The Coyotes responded and won the finale, 8-6. The victory helped clinched a point for SDSU Athletics in the Interstate Series, presented by First Interstate Bank. South Dakota State has won seven straight regular season series against South Dakota, dating back to the 2017 season.Â
The Jackrabbits are 17-20 overall, and 2-1 in Summit League play, heading into their series against the Fighting Hawks. SDSU faces a North Dakota squad that is 22-11 overall. The Fighting Hawks last season matched their most wins at the Division I level with 26. UND is currently trending towards its first winning season since 1995. Their current .667 winning percentage this season would be the program's best ever, dating back to 1977.
SDSU and North Dakota meet for the 100th time in the opening game of the series on Saturday. The Jackrabbits hold a 68-31 record all-time over the Fighting Hawks.Â
The foes have played annually since 2011. SDSU has won five straight regular season series against the Hawks with the last series loss in 2019. The Jacks currently have a 15-game winning streak over the Fighting Hawks.
North Dakota will get its Summit League schedule started when it takes the field in Brookings. The Fighting Hawks are coming off a doubleheader win over Dakota State on Wednesday. Last weekend, UND traveled to the Pacific Northwest. The Fighting Hawks lost 8-0 in five innings to nationally-ranked Washington, while they split a doubleheader at Portland State.Â
UND has been boosted by its pitching and its fielding efforts so far this season. North Dakota ranks tied for first in the conference with SDSU in double plays turned (14). The Fighting Hawks rank second in the league in fielding percentage (.967) and third in ERA (3.82). They rank among the nation's top 100 in all of those categories, along with 37th in the country in doubles (52).
South Dakota State's hitting numbers continue to be among the best in The Summit League. The Jackrabbits lead the conference in doubles (63), hits (307) and RBIs (195), while they're in the top three in home runs (38), on-base percentage (.384), batting average (.306), slugging percentage (.520), walks (123) and runs scored (5.65).
The Jacks were led at the plate by multiple players in Vermillion this past weekend.
Emma Christensen was 5-for-8 with a team-high four runs scored. Also among SDSU's top hitters were
Abby Gentry (.429),
Emma Vike (.400) and
Mia Buske (.400). Seven different players had two RBIs apiece.
Akayla Barnard had a team-high two home runs.
Six Jacks are hitting .300 on the season in
Amanda Vacanti (.398), Christensen (.343), Vike (.338),
Alivya Bollen (.316), Barnard (.313) and Gentry (.306). Vike has a Summit-League leading 44 hits while Barnard is the conference's leader with 11 home runs. Barnard is also second in the league in runs scored (34).Â
