DES MOINES, IOWA — South Dakota State posts three record-breaking relay performances at the Blue Oval on Friday night.
DRAKE RELAYS The men's 4X200-meter relay team, consisting of Parker Peterson, Landen Matkins, Carter Toews and Lucas Flemmer, highlighted the night with a record-breaking run to become the event's champions. The squad clocked a time of 1:24.18, downing the 55-year-old program record of 1:26.10, set by Robbin Bong, Glenn Carlson, Rob Wahlstrom and John Fillhaus in 1971. The previous 4X200-relay record was tied with the 1600-meter medley relay record as the oldest program record in the books.
Harris and Raw, alongside Silja Gunderson and Sian O'Sullivan, bested the women's 4X100-meter relay record as well. The team posted a time of 45.38 to finish fourth overall and advance to the finals, scheduled for Saturday at 2:30 p.m. On the men's side, Peterson, Matkins and Toews, alongside freshman Griffin Fischer, finished fourth overall with a time of 40.64 to become the eighth-best performers in program history. The Jackrabbit's performance clutched the squad a spot in the finals, slated to race after the women.
KIP JANVRIN INVITE Carter Johnson took gold in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.13. The junior's performance secured him as the second-best performer in program history as his time bested David Hegland's personal record of 14.18. Carter Johnson's new personal best currently sits about half of a second behind Pierre Lear's program record of 13.57.
Hannah Spoden clutched bronze in the 1500-meter race. Spoden crossed the line at 4:29.67, only 0.42 seconds off from an SDSU top 10 placement, as Nicole Scherr currently sits at 10th-best with a personal record of 4:29.25. Emma Ecker and Starlyn Edwards raced as well, finishing seventh and 12th, respectively. Ecker clocked a time of 4:34.47, while Edwards, finished at 4:40.39.
Dale Johnson posted a 3000-meter steeplechase time of 9:08.74 to take third. Tyler O'Neill and Keaton Olson competed as well, finishing seventh and 16th, respectively. O'Niell crossed the line at 9:24.72, while Olson finished with a time of 9:43.93.
Jared Lutmer found a top-five finish in the 5000-meter race with a time of 14:31.96. On the women's side, Nicole Swanson clocked a time of 17:24.60 to finish eighth.
Jake Werner raced in the 100-meter dash, where he finished fourth with a time of 10.72. On the women's side, Reese Beemer claimed a spot in the top-five after crossing the line at 12.48.
Werner also raced in the 200-meter competition. The senior crossed the line at 21.95 to take seventh in the event.
Cael Woods competed in the 400-meter hurdles alongside Jackson Roberts. Woods finished seventh with a time of 54.44, while Roberts posted a time of 55.89 to take 11th. On the women's side, Alynna Henderson crossed the line at 1:06.25 to place seventh.
