FARGO, N.D. — South Dakota State sees two podium finishes and five qualifying performances at the Outdoor Track and Field Summit League Championships on Thursday evening.
Josie Curry kicked off the day with a silver medal in the hammer throw. Curry posted a personal record mark of 187-07 (57.18m) to finish runner-up and become the third-best performer in program history.
Cashton Johnson rounded out the night with a bronze medal in the 10,000-meter race, crossing the line at 31:22.54. Will Lohr and Jared Lutmer raced as well, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Lohr kept up with the champion, Oral Roberts' Abraham Chelangam, for most of the race before Chelangam shook him free, resulting in Lohr crossing the line at 31:35.17. Lutmer crossed the line soon after, posting a time of 31:38.52.
Ellie Harris finished first in her heat at 23.54 to qualify for the 200-meter finals scheduled for Saturday at 2:20 p.m. Chloe Raw and Sian O'Sullivan qualified as well, with Raw winning her heat and O'Sullivan clocking a qualifying time. Raw finished under 24 seconds for the first time in her collegiate career at 23.93 to become the third-best performer in program history, while O'Sullivan PRed at 24.29 to become the eighth-best performer in SDSU history.
On the men's side, Carter Toews tied the 10th-best performer in Jackrabbit history, Landon Larson's time of 21.31 , to qualify for the 200-meter finals, scheduled to take place after the women's 200-meter race on Saturday.
Cael Woods and Jenna Johnson earned a spot in the 400-meter hurdles finals for their respective genders. Woods posted a time of 53.81 to qualify, while Jenna Johnson crossed the line at 1:01.29 to earn her spot in the finals.
Ryan Benson lit up day one of the decathlon. Benson finished fourth in long jump with a mark of 22-03.00 (6.78m), before tying his personal record in high jump with a leap of 6-05.50 (1.97m) to finish third. The senior is currently fourth with 3675 points, and five events left to go, beginning tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
Caiden Fredrick and Ryan Hackbart placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the men's hammer throw. Fredrick posted a mark of 188-00 (57.31m), while Hackbart threw 185-02 (56.45m).
Emma Gonzalez and Eleni Lovgren placed in the top 10 in the 10,000-meter race. Gonzalez clocked a time of 36:59.13 for eighth, while Lovgren finished ninth at 37:17.46.
