South Dakota State is back in Brookings for the first of three straight matches at Fishback Soccer Park on Thursday. The Jackrabbits host Western Illinois at 7 p.m.
The Jacks opened the season with three straight victories at home. Last Thursday, SDSU claimed a 3-0 win against Washington State at Fishback Soccer Park. The first road test of the season for the Jackrabbits came at Kansas State against the Wildcats of the Big 12 Conference this past Sunday. Following a red card drawn in the 20th minute, SDSU was forced to compete with a player down for the next 70 minutes of the match. K-State scored in the 29th minute, then found the back of the net in the 52nd minute, en route to a 2-0 victory over SDSU.Â
South Dakota State kept things tight against K-State despite playing a woman down for a majority of its game Sunday. The Jacks held the Wildcats to a season-low two goals as Kansas State improved to 4-0. SDSU fell to 3-1 on the season in the defeat.Â
The Jackrabbits lost by multiple goals for the first time in the last two seasons. SDSU last was defeated by two goals in its 2024 NCAA Tournament loss, a 2-0 decision, at nationally-ranked Minnesota. State had to compete with a player down, 11-on-10, for the first time in a match since the 2023 season.Â
SDSU's match against Kansas State gave an opportunity to sophomore Leah Bacon. She came on in replacement of senior Mallorie Benhart and had a strong showing coming out of a reserve role. Bacon recorded a career-high five saves while playing a career-high 70 minutes. Also standing out was Mia Bosch who played a career-high 81 minutes, while MaKynlie Cade logged a season-high 54 minutes, and Gentry Williams played the most minutes of her career of 71.
South Dakota State faces Western Illinois on Thursday for the first time since 2024. That visit in Macomb saw the Jackrabbits come away with a 3-0 victory which included a brace from Katelyn Beulke. The Jacks hold an 18-1-1 record all-time over the Leathernecks with 14 straight victories dating back to 2011. Western Illinois is 0-4 this season, most recently falling by a 3-1 score at home to Eastern Washington.
