BROOKINGS, S.D. ? South Dakota State sophomore Kellyn Farrell netted a goal in the 39th minute, but SDSU fell to Minnesota, 2-1, Sunday at Fishback Soccer Park.
Kelsey Hood gave the Gophers a 1-0 advantage in the match, heading the ball into the back of the net off a corner kick by Kaitlin Wagner. Farrell, a sophomore from Littleton, Colo., tied the game in the 39th minute by beating Minnesota goalkeeper Lindsey Dare from the right side of the box. The goal marked her second consecutive game in which she has netted a goal.
SDSU squandered several scoring opportunities after the half as both Farrell and Kelsey Worcester saw their shots blocked by the Golden Gopher defense late in the second half.
Lindsey Schwartz secured the Minnesota win in the 68th minute off an assist from Wagner and Hood.
Farrell looked to tie the game with eight minutes left in the match, but saw her shot saved by Dare. In the final eight minutes of the match, SDSU outshot the Gophers, 5-0.
Minnesota finished the match with a 23-18 advantage in shots attempted, including a 11-10 advantage in the second half. The Jacks were led on offense by Farrell, who recorded six shot attempts for the match. Worcester added four, while junior Rachel Tritz shot twice late in the game.
The goalkeeper tandem of Jenn Davis and Nicole Lograsso made seven stops on the day, while Dare recorded five saves.
The Jackrabbits moved to 4-9-2 on the year and 0-2-1 against Minnesota since moving to Division I in 2004. The Golden Gophers improved to 8-7-1.
South Dakota State will look to get back on track next weekend when it takes on Utah Valley State in Orem, Utah. Start time for the match against the Wolverines is set for 3 p.m. (MT).
