WASHINGTON, D.C. ? Kellyn Farrell netted two goals and assisted on another as the South Dakota State University women's soccer team breezed to an 8-0 shutout of Howard University Thursday afternoon in quarterfinal action at the United Soccer Conference tournament.
Farrell put SDSU on the board 51 seconds into the match, scoring her third goal of the year. Chelsea Goosen gave the Jacks a 2-0 advantage in the first half off an assist by Farrell. Goosen, a sophomore from Olathe, Kan., increased the SDSU lead 11 minutes later beating Bison goalkeeper DeLaine Anderson.
Junior Heather Hill closed out the first half scoring, finding the back of the net off an assist from Alex Schaller.
Farrell continued the SDSU scoring in the second half, netting a goal in the 48th minute of the match. Freshman Chelsea Lira gave the Jackrabbits a 6-0 advantage in the contest off an assist from defender Rachael Tritz.
After Hill added a late goal in the match, sophomore Kellie Van Gerpen, a Brookings native, closed out the game by scoring her first collegiate goal off an assist from Hill.
SDSU outshot Howard 24-1 in the match, including a 14-0 advantage in the second half. 21 players for the Jackrabbits saw action. The eight points marked the most points ever scored in a conference tournament match by South Dakota State. Both Lira and Van Gerpen netted their first career goals.
The shutout marked the sixth time this season the Jackrabbits have held an opponent scoreless for a match and the ninth contest in 11 games SDSU has held an opponent off the scoreboard for a half. The tandem of Nicole Lograsso and Jenn Davis only faced one shot on the day, while Anderson recorded seven saves.
With the win, the Jacks moved to 7-9-2 on the year, while Howard finished its season with a 1-16-0 record.
South Dakota State will face Utah Valley State Friday at 1 p.m. (ET) in semifinal action at Greene Stadium in Washington, D.C. The winner of the match will play for the conference championship on Sunday at noon (ET).
The Jacks previously defeated the Wolverines, 1-0, on Oct. 20.
