CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Matt Cadwell scored a season-high 25 points for South Dakota State, but it wasn't enough as a balanced Northern Iowa squad handed the Jackrabbit men's basketball team its sixth straight loss, 69-56, Friday night at the McLeod Center.
SDSU, 0-6 on the season, returns to action at home on Monday against Arkansas State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Frost Arena.
Northern Iowa improved to 4-1.
Cadwell scored the first four points of the game and SDSU led for the last time at 6-4 on a basket by Michael Loney with 16 minutes, 7 seconds remaining in the first half. The Jackrabbits tied the game at 15-all on a three-pointer by Blake Yackley midway through the half, but Jared Josten gave UNI the lead for good a minute later with a three-pointer.
UNI led 28-23 at halftime, but the Jackrabbits crawled back to within a point at 38-37 on a Kai Williams jumper with 13:12 remaining in the game.
However, Kwadzo Ahelegbe came off the bench and hit back-to-back three pointers to spark a 13-2 run that put the game out of reach.
SDSU could get no closer than 58-51 on a Cadwell three-pointer with 4:32 remaining.
Eric Coleman led UNI with 16 points, with Grant Stout and Adam Viet each scoring 11. Brooks McKowen added 10 points and seven assists.
UNI shot 42 percent from the field, 22-of-52, including 7-of-19 from three-point range. The Jackrabbits shot at a higher percentage from the floor, making 24-of-52 attempts, including 6-of-19 on three-pointers.
The difference in the game came at the free-throw line, where the Panthers converted 18-of-25 tries, 72 percent, compared to only a 2-for-6 effort by SDSU, 33 percent.
Northern Iowa held a slim 32-30 rebounding advantage, with Stout pulling down a game-high eight boards.
Michael Loney led SDSU with six rebounds and tallied nine points before fouling out late in the second half.
