BROOKINGS, S.D. ? In a game that saw 13 lead changes and nine ties, South Dakota State hung tough against Arkansas State and would not be denied their first win of the season Monday night, 84-78 at Frost Arena.
The win snaps the Jackrabbits season opening losing streak at six and snaps a four game ASU win streak in the process.
The seventh and final lead change of the first half came with 4:45 left when Mackenzie Casey fed a streaking Matt Cadwell who made an underhanded reverse layup that put the Jacks up 28-27.
Cadwell scored 15 points in the first half, and the Jacks went into the locker room up three, 39-36.
SDSU led by as many as seven at the start of the second half, but ASU kept chipping away, and used a 9-1 run to take a short-lived 50-49 lead with 15:08 on the clock.
Andy Kleinjan buried one of his three three-point shots 18 second later to get the Jackrabbit lead back, but ASU chipped away again, and took another one-point lead with 10:38 left, only to see it vanish 16 seconds later on a Michael Loney layup that put the Jacks back on top 60-59.
Arkansas State got one more lead and one more tie before Cadwell put the Jacks up for good on a three-pointer from the wing with 48 seconds left.
Cadwell led all scorers with 23 points on 7-of-10 (70 percent) shooting, including 4-of-5 (80 percent) from three-point range. Cadwell made all five of his free throws and added four assists in the win.
Michael Loney came on strong in the second half, scoring all of his 16 points after the break. Loney went 8-of-9 from the free throw line, which made the difference down the stretch, and added a game high 11 rebounds to complete the games only double-double.
Andy Kleinjan rounded out the double-digit scorers for SDSU with 12 points on 3-of-8 shooting, all three-pointers and went 3-of-4 from the free throw line.
Blake Yackley scored all of his nine points from three-point range and has now made his last eight shots from beyond the arc.
Isaac Wells led ASU with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Adrian Banks added 16 and Chris Brown 12 in a losing cause.
Arkansas State shot 63 percent (17-for-27) from the floor in the second half, and finished the game shooting 53.3 percent (32-for-60), compared to the Jackrabbits 49.1 percent (28-for-57).
The Jacks finished the game with 39 rebounds, 11 more than the 28 by ASU.
Free Throws made the difference in the game. The Jacks went 14-for-18 (77.8 percent) from the line, while ASU finished the game a dismal 4-for-11 (36.4 percent).
South Dakota State improves to 1-6 with the win while Arkansas State falls to 4-4.
The Jacks return to action on Wednesday night, when they host 2006 NCAA Tournament qualifier Utah State at Frost Arena. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m.
