KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Redshirt freshman Blake Yackley scored a career-high 18 points and a total of five Jackrabbits scored in double figures Tuesday night as South Dakota State wrapped up its five-game road trip with a 79-71 overtime win against UMKC.
The Jackrabbits scored first, but UMKC went on an 8-0 run to take an early 8-2 lead. After a Kai Williams free throw ended the run, Jose Frias erupted for eight of his 12 first-half points in a 10-2 Jackrabbit run to give SDSU an 11-10 lead.
The teams tied three times and exchanged the lead nine times in the first half, but UMKC took a 36-31 lead into the break.
The second half played much like the first, and the Jacks battled back to tie the game at 51 with just over 12 minutes left on a pair of Garrett Callahan free throws.
The Jacks continued to lead until Quinton Day buried a three pointer with six minutes left to give UMKC a 61-60 lead. The lead changed five times in the second half, and was tied twice including at 66 when regulation ended, sending the game to overtime.
Kai Williams kicked off the extra frame with a three-pointer that put State on top, then Dominique Johnson answered with a three of his own. But the Jacks took over from there and Williams put the game out of reach when Frias fed him for a big dunk that put the Jacks on top for good 77-71 on their way to a 79-71 win.
Williams tied a career high with 17 points in playing the entire 45 minutes, also a career high.
Yackley's 18 points came on 7-of 10 shooting including 4-of-6 from three-point range while playing a career-high 38 minutes.
Callahan scored a career-high 16 points, most of them coming from the free throw line, where went 11-of-12. He also dished out a career-high six assists in a career high 40 minutes.
