MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. ? Seventy Six years after the first meeting between South Dakota State and Minnesota, the Gophers held a 9-0 series advantage entering play Thursday night at historic Williams Arena in Minneapolis. The Jackrabbits came out hot against the Gophers, but came up short of getting their first win of the series, losing to Minnesota 77-53.
Andy Kleinjan opened the scoring with a three-point basket to put the Jacks up 3-0. The next time down the floor, Michael Loney nailed a three, and the Jacks went up 6-0. SDSU jumped out to an 8-2 lead, but it quickly vanished, and turned into a 45-28 halftime lead for Minnesota behind 20 first half points from junior Dan Coleman.
The second half started much like the first, with a barrage of points from Coleman and the Gophers, who opened the second half by outscoring the Jacks 20-6.
Michael Loney led the Jacks with 13 points, adding three rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Kai Williams finished the game with 11 points and led the Jacks with six rebounds, while Matt Cadwell scored eight points in his return to the Twin Cities.
Coleman led all scorers with 28 points, Lawrence McKenzie pitched in 15 for the Gophers.
Minnesota out rebounded the Jacks 34-30 and tallied 12 blocks to the Jacks three.
Minnesota improves to 4-6 with the win, while the Jacks fall to 2-8.
The Jacks play the third game in its five game road trip on Sunday against the Montana Grizzlies in Missoula, Montana. Tip off at the Adams Center is scheduled for 12:35 p.m. MT.
