INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. ? South Dakota State led on two different occasions early in Saturday's game against Butler, but the Bulldogs took advantage of the Jackrabbits 4-for-20 first half shooting effort and parlayed a 33-14 halftime lead into a 62-47 win at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Garrett Callahan opened the scoring with a three-pointer to give the Jacks its first lead, then scored another three-pointer with 13:38 to go in the first half to give the Jacks its second and final lead of the game.
Trailing 6-5 after the Callahan three-pointer, Butler used runs of 13-0 and 11-0 to build the 19-point halftime lead.
The cold shooting continued at the start of the second half, as the Bulldogs opened on a 6-0 run that Matt Cadwell snapped with his first points of the game, a free throw with 15:17 left to play.
The cold shooting eventuall heated up, and Jacks outscored the Bulldogs 33-29 in the second half thanks to a 9-of-16 (57 percent) second half shooting performance.
Kai Williams led the Jacks with 12 points on 3-of-7 shooting, he made all four of his free throw attempts and grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
Callahan finished the game with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-4 from three-point range.
Jackrabbit junior Michael Loney, who sat out the last five games with an injury, played 17 minutes and scored one point from the free throw line.
Junior Troy Wipf scored the first points of his Jackrabbit career when he made both of his free throw attempts late in the game.
Nine different Bulldogs scored in the game, but Brandon Crone led the balanced attack with 14 points while Pete Campbell rounded out Butler's double-digit scorers with 11 points.
The 12th ranked Bulldogs improve to 15-2 with the win, while the Jacks fall to 4-13.
South Dakota State returns to action next Sunday when they take on Cal State Northridge. Tip off at the Matadome in Northridge, California is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT (4 p.m. CT).
