FORT WAYNE, Ind. ? Two days after a tough loss at New Jersey Tech, South Dakota State came out strong on Saturday at IPFW, but unfortunately the Jackrabbits sputtered down the stretch and lost their fourth straight game 68-52.
The Mastodons capitalized on two SDSU turnovers on its first two possessions and scored the game's first six points, but the Jackrabbits chipped away at the lead until taking it over seven minutes into the game on five Matt Cadwell points in less than a minute.
After trading the lead twice in the next five minutes, the Jacks took it back on a Jose Frias three-pointer with 7:04 remaining in the half. Frias then padded that lead seconds later with a steal and layup that gave the Jacks a 26-21 lead.
Cadwell put the Jacks up by seven the next time down the floor and South Dakota State went into halftime on top 33-28.
The Jacks lead at half thanks, in large part, to a 53.8 percent (14-of-26) shooting effort from the floor, compared to IPFW, who shot 38.5 percent (10-of-26) in the first half.
SDSU boosted its lead to eight points with just two minutes gone in the second half, but it all went down hill after that as IPFW outscored the Jacks 40-19 in the second half on their way to the win.
After shooting almost 54 percent in the first half, the Jacks shot a mere 20.8 percent (5-of-24) in the second half, while the Mastodons rebounded from a poor shooting first half to shoot 55 percent (11-of-20) in the second half.
Kai Williams led the Jacks with 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting and added nine rebounds, Cadwell finished the night with 13 points to round out the Jackrabbits double digit scorers.
Jaraun Burrows led a balanced IPFW attack with 15 points and eight rebounds. Tyler Best scored 13 points and Demetrius Johnson added 12 points.
The Jacks fall to 5-19 on the season while IPFW improves to 9-15.
South Dakota State returns to action on Thursday, when they take on Texas Pan-American in Edinburg, Texas.
Tip off at UTPA Fieldhouse is scheduled for 7 p.m.
