FARGO, N.D. ? Senior Jose Frias tied a career high with 20 points, and South Dakota State played North Dakota State tough all night, but the Jackrabbits could not avoid the season sweep at the hands of the Bison, who swept the season series Saturday night for the first time since the 1990-91 season with an 86-69 win.
NDSU scored the first four points of the game, but the Jacks quickly countered with a 7-0 run that put SDSU up by three points just two and a half minutes into the game.
The lead did not last long, as the Bison found their form and erupted for 13 unanswered points over the next five minutes.
After trading baskets for the next few minutes, the Jacks went off on a 10-0 run that cut the Bison lead to three at 24-21 with six minutes, two seconds left in the first half.
Both teams shot 48 percent in the first half, but the Bison made one more field goal and six more free throws to take a 36-28 lead into the locker room.
The Bison came out hot in the second half, scoring the first seven points of the half to boost their lead to 17 points just two minutes, 20 seconds in.
The Jacks cut that lead down to nine points with less than six minutes left, but the Bison rattled five quick points and never looked back.
Along with his 20 points, Frias added eight rebounds, a pair of assists and a steal to lead the Jackrabbits.
Kai Williams continued to boost his season averages, he scored 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the loss.
Ben Woodside led the balanced Bison attack with 23 points, Andre Smith scored 22, Mike Nelson added 16 and Brett Winkelman rounded out the double-digit scorers with 15.
Both teams committed just 11 turnovers, but the Bison scored 31 of their points from the free throw line (31-of-43) compared the Jackrabbits, who scored eight (8-of-16).
NDSU improves to 18-8 on the season, while the Jacks fall to 5-23.
South Dakota State ends its season at home next week with a pair of games at Frost Arena. The Jacks will honor seniors Jose Frias and
Andy Kleinjan on Senior Night prior to hosting IPFW on Thursday night, then wrap up the season on Saturday against New Jersey Tech.
Both games tip off at 7 p.m.
