NEWARK, N.J. – South Dakota State kicked off a four game road trip Thursday night in Newark, New Jersey against New Jersey Tech, and despite playing close all night, the Jackrabbits came up short 62-67.
The Highlanders scored the first four points of the game and eventually built that lead to eight points with 13:04 to play in the first half.
The Jacks battled back to tie the game at 14 on a Thomas Bassett lay up, then took its first and, as it turns out, only lead of the game at 17-16 when Mark Engen kicked out to Mackenzie Casey who buried a three-pointer with 10:06 left in the half.
The Jackrabbit lead did not last though, because Dan Lewis knocked down a jumper 19 seconds later to put the Highlanders back on top by one. A Clayton Barker basket and free throw boosted the lead back up to four before a Kai Williams steal and three-pointer got the Jacks back within one.
Williams hit another three pointer before the half ended, but the Jacks still trailed 27-25 at the half.
New Jersey Tech went on a quick 8-0 run at the start of the second half to boost its lead to ten points with just over 17 minutes remaining, and led by 13 points with 12 minutes to go when the Jacks tried to mount a comeback.
The Jacks got three three-pointers from Matt Cadwell and one from Andy Kleinjan over the next five minutes to cut the Highlander lead to four points.
After another four minutes, and six points from Michael Loney, the Jacks clawed back to within two points of the lead with 4:13 left in the game.
The Highlanders led by five points when Cadwell hit another three-pointer with 23 seconds left to give the Jacks some hope, but New Jersey Tech went 3-of-4 from the free throw line down the stretch to secure the win.
New Jersey Tech improves to 4-18 with the win, while the Jacks fall to 5-18.
Cadwell led the Jackrabbits with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting (5-of-8 from three point range) he also made all three of his free throw attempts.
Loney finished with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting and also made all three of his free throws.
Williams hit three three-point shots and added one free throw to finish with 10 points, he also added a game-high nine rebounds.
Barker led all scorers with 27 points, Kraig Peters scored 11 and three other highlanders added seven points each.
The Jackrabbits out rebounded the Highlanders 32-27, but Jacks committed 17 turnovers compared eight by NJIT.
South Dakota State shot 43.8 percent (21-of-48) from the field, but did connect on 11 of their 21 three-point attempts (52.4 percent) and went 9-of-11 from the free throw line.
New Jersey Tech shot 43.1 percent (22-of-51) from the field, 7-of-23 from three-point range and 16-of-20 from the free throw line.
The Jacks return to action in their four game road trip on Saturday night in Fort Wayne Indiana, when they square off against IPFW.
Tip off at Hilliard Gates Sports Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT).
