BROOKINGS, S.D. ? South Dakota State and UMKC both came into Thursday's game at Frost Arena with one Summit League win, but only the Kangaroos ended the night with two, after beating the Jackrabbits 64-58, in front of 2,184 fans.
Along with boosting the conference record to 2-4, UMKC improves to 7-12 overall, while SDSU falls to 6-12 overall and 1-6 in league play.
Sophomore Garrett Callahan led three Jackrabbits in double figures with 16 points, while senior Ben Beran and redshirt freshman Anthony Cordova both pitched in with ten.
UMKC's Dane Brumagin led all scorers with 20 points and Tim Blackwell added 13 points for the Kangaroos in the win.
UMKC scored the first basket of the game, but the Jacks scored the next eight to open up a lead that they held onto for the rest of the half.
The Jacks would lead by as many as eight points in the first half, but UMKC kept is close, and trailed by just three at the half at 34-31.
SDSU increased its lead to six points early in the second half, but UMKC continued to chip away and took its first lead since the 18:55 mark of the first half on a lay up by reserve Kenny Simms with 10:37 to go to make it a 44-43, game.
A lay up on the other end by Mohamed Bert? gave the Jacks the lead back for a short time, as a Blackwell three pointer with 7:49 to play put the Kangaroos up for good.
The Jacks kept it close the rest of the way, but UMKC went 11-for-12 from the free throw line over the last six minutes to secure the win, which made up for the Kangaroo's 29 percent shooting percentage (8-of-27) in the second half.
UMKC also won the battle on the boards, out rebounding the Jackrabbits 36-33 overall, and 14-10 on the offensive glass. The Jacks also committed 12 turnovers to the Kangaroo's eight.
South Dakota State looks to get back on the winning track on Saturday in the Corduroy Classic, when they host Southern Utah in the second game of a double header.
The Jackrabbit women tip-off at 5 p.m., the men tip at 7:30 p.m.
