Junior Kaitlin Justice knocked home her first goal of the year as the South Dakota State Jackrabbits played on a downhill field for most of the game and rolled to a 1-0 win over Wisconsin-Green Bay in women's soccer action at Fishback Soccer Park Friday night.
A streaking Justice received a feed from fellow junior Tory Schiltgen in the middle of the field, and chipped home a shot over Phoenix goalkeeper Maddie Drusch for the game-winner at the 57:04 mark.
SDSU improves to 1-3-1 overall, while the Phoenix fall to 1-2. The Jacks also notch their first win over UW-GB and up their record to 1-2 against the Horizon League team.
"It's always great to get the first win of the season," said head coach Lang Wedemeyer. "The girls played hard and played very good soccer at times. We will certainly take this first victory and more forward, the girls certainly deserved it."
The Jacks played most of the game with possession as SDSU held UW-GB to one shot in the first half compared to 10 for State. SDSU withstood a couple of late rallies but held off the Phoenix to preserve the win. Overall, the Jacks outshot UW-GB 25-6, including 8-3 in shots on-goal.
Sophomore Brie Rogers went the distance for the Jacks, securing her first shutout of the season and second of her young career. She also corralled three shots.
The Jacks return to Fishback Soccer Park next Friday when they host Drake out of the Missouri Valley Conference at 6 p.m.
