With the score knotted at 1-all, freshman Christa Nyblom scored her first collegiate goal to give the Jackrabbit women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over the Drake Bulldogs, Friday night at Fishback Soccer Park.
The Bulldogs drew first blood as Ali Walsh scored in the 16th minute, but it didn't take long for the Jacks to find the equalizer.
Sophomore Kayla Braffet sent a cross to junior Emily Quigley deep in the box. Quigley then headed the ball to junior Kaitlin Justice who dribbled around a Bulldog defender to net the goal in the 23rd minute, tying the score at 1-1.
The Jacks took the lead for good on a highlight-reel worthy goal from Nyblom. Junior Danni Healy fed Braffet in the center of the field who touched a pass to Nyblom, who then deeked the Bulldog goalkeeper for the game winner.
“We continue to get better every game, and tonight was no exception,” said head coach Lang Wedemeyer. “We played a quality opponent in Drake tonight and proved that our team is coming together nicely as we finish the first portion of our schedule.”
SDSU improves to 2-3-1 on the season while Drake falls to 1-3-2.
Led by Justice with four shots, the Jacks outshot the Bulldogs 16-12, including 7-4 in shots on-goal.
Des Moines native, Dani Pappas, beat her hometown school for her first win of the season. Pappas allowed one goal and also stopped three.
The Jacks head to Lawrence, Kan. next weekend for the KU Invitational where they will take on Missouri State and the host school Kansas.
