FARGO, N.D. - South Dakota State's four game overall winning streak and five game Summit League winning streak came to an end on Friday at Bison Sports Arena in Fargo, as North Dakota State downed the Jacks 79-67.
The loss drops the Jacks to an even 9-9 overall, 5-2 in The Summit League, while the Bison improve to 6-10 overall, 3-3 in league play.
The only streak that did continue on Friday does not go in the Jacks favor, as the loss marks the seventh straight at the hands of the Bison, dating back to a 67-65 Jackrabbit win on Feb. 18, 2006 at Frost Arena.
"There's no whining or moaning in the locker room," said SDSU head coach Scott Nagy. "They understand that they got their tails kicked, and I think that we have the kind of team right now that can overcome that, comeback, get themselves prepared for IPFW, because that's the next game and all we will be talking about."
Garrett Callahan led the Jacks with 15 points off the bench, Anthony Cordova added 14 points to round out the double digit scorers for the Jacks. Eric Carlson, who scored the first six points of the game to stake NDSU to a 6-0 lead, scored a career-high 23 in the win. Sam Sussenguth added 16, while Michael Tveidt and Josh Vaughan both finidhed with 14, Tveidt added a game-high 10 rebounds for the game's only double-double.
Despite Carlson leading the Bison to the early lead, the Jacks fought through it and used a 10-0 run late in the first half, and outscored the Bison 16-5 over the last eight minutes of the half to take a 42-34 lead to the lockerroom.
The Bison responded, opening the second half on 7-0 run to quickly cut the lead to 37-44. They parlayed that into a 15-2 run over the first five minutes to go up 47-44.
SDSU came back to tie the game at 52 with 12:46 left on a Nate Wolters layup, but the Bison regained the lead 23 seconds later on a Sussenguth free throw and never trailed again.
The Bison struggled at the free throw line in the first half, but made them down the stretch to secure the win, which snaps a three game skid.
The Jackrabbits return to action on Thursday, when they host IPFW in Frost Arena at 7 p.m.
