BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota State women's soccer team edged Eastern Washington 4-3 in double overtime Sunday at Fishback Soccer Park.
The Jackrabbits found an early lead when Cori Bonte and Danni Healy found Kayla Braffet right in front of the net to beat EWU's goalkeeper Lisa Dimak two minutes into the game.
The Eagles stayed on pace with the Jacks and Whitney Brannan found a rebound off a shot by Brittany Sparks to put the ball past Jackrabbit goalkeeper Elisa Stamatakis in the 12th minute. The goal ended Stamatakis's shutout streak at four games.
In the 23rd minute, Kaitlin Justice kicked a loose ball to the back of the net for an unassisted goal to up the score 2-1.
Brannan, on a breakaway, split the defense and beat Stamatakis for a second time to tie the game at 2-2 in the 58th minute.
Three minutes later, Courtney Higgins took the cross from a corner kick by Christa Nyblom and beat goalkeeper Jamie Walker on her left side to give the Jacks a 3-2 lead.
At the 65-minute mark, Stamatakis saved a shot by Brannan but left the net wide open. Brannan found her own rebound and the back of the net to tie the game at 3-3.
One minute into the double overtime, Healy scored her third goal of the season off a deflection on the right side to lead the Jacks to a 4-3 victory.
"It felt great to get the win today and to score some goals," said head coach Lang Wedemeyer. "We were very dangerous in the attack and got good contributions from a variety of players. Now we need to put together a complete game offensively and defensively."
Kelsey Ferguson led the Jacks with seven shots, including two on-goal. Braffet followed with five shots and one on-goal. Overall, the Jacks outshot the Eagles 26-9 and 9-8 on-goal.
Stamatakis, whose record improves to 4-0-2, tallied five saves for the game.
The Jackrabbits face in-state rivals South Dakota Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Fishback Soccer Park.
