South Dakota State needed a win to get back above .500 in Summit League play and to keep from remaining winless in doubleheaders, and the Jackrabbits got it on Saturday in a big way, with a dominating 87-52 win over IPFW.
The Jacks largest-ever margin of victory in a Summit League game boosts their record to 13-7 overall and 5-4 in league play. The Mastodons fall to 13-7 overall and 5-4 in league play.
Every Jackrabbit played at least 10 minutes in the win, including Clint Sargent, who led all players with 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting, 5-of-8 from three-point range. Dale Moss added a season-high 17 points, including a monster put-back dunk that put the Jacks up 22-12 with 9:31 left in the first half. Moss also added a game-high seven rebounds. Jordan Dykstra scored 12 points in the win and Nate Wolters an even 10 points to round out the Jackrabbits double-digit scorers.
"I think Dale and Clint deserve a lot of the credit because they're seniors on this team that play a lot," head coach Scott Nagy said. "Obviously Payton Tivis is a senior too, and a tremendous leader for us, but Dale and Clint are the ones on the floor most of the time and they got us off to a great start."
The Jackrabbits great start included a 14-4 run to open the contest. In that five minute run, Sargent hit a three-pointer that prompted an IPFW timeout, while Moss posted three assists, a steal and a layup.
SDSU turned that 10-point lead to a 42-22 halftime lead and then used a 21-0 run in the second half to push the lead to a game-high 40 points at 69-29 with just over nine minutes to play. The Mastodons would get no closer than 32 points the rest of the way.
The Jackrabbits start the second half of The Summit League season on Thursday in Frost Arena against UMKC at 7 p.m. SDSU won the first meeting 91-71 on Dec. 30, in Kansas City, Mo.
