The South Dakota State women's soccer team is back home to open conference play in The Summit League against Oral Roberts and Southern Utah.
SDSU enters the game with a 4-5-1 record overall. The Jacks struggled a bit on the road, falling at Iowa State, 1-0, before tying Northern Iowa, 2-2 (2ot). SDSU took last week off before returning to the pitch for this weekend's conference games.
Senior Kayla Braffet leads the offensive attack for the Jackrabbits with three goals, two assists, 34 shots and 15 shots on goal. Senior Kelsey Ferguson is tied for the lead or second in all categories with two goals, two assists, 28 shots and 10 shots on goal. Sophomore Abby Jurgens has also scored two goals, while junior Megan Huegli has recorded two assists.
Senior Kat Donovan has made 38 saves en route to three shutouts in her 10 starts in goal for the Jacks.
Head coach Lang Wedemeyer leads the Jackrabbits in his twelfth season. Wedemeyer compiled a 100-82-24 record in his first 11 seasons.
THIS WEEK'S COMPETITION
Oral Roberts – The Jacks face the Golden Eagles for the fifth time in school history. SDSU is undefeated in the all-time series at 4-0-0.
Being as Oral Roberts is located in the southern part of the country, the two teams have no common opponents from the non-conference portion of the schedule.
Last season, the Jacks won a 1-0 decision against ORU at Fishback Soccer Park. South Dakota State scored the game-winning goal two minutes before halftime. Steph Peterson provided the assist on the lone goal.
The Jacks outshot the Golden Eagles 20-3, including a 10-2 shots on goal advantage. SDSU took four corner kicks to ORU's two. The Golden Eagle's goalkeeper made nine saves, while Elisa Stamatakis made two.
In the four game series, SDSU has not surrendered a goal, outscoring ORU 5-0. Three of the games have been won by 1-0 scores.
Last week, ORU defeated Southwest Baptist, 2-1, in Tulsa, Okla., before falling to Kansas, 6-1, in Lawrence, Kan.
Southern Utah – The Jacks face the Thunderbirds for the sixth time in school history. SDSU leads the all-time series 3-1-1. The lone win for SUU was in 2004.
The Thunderbirds and Jackrabbits will have three common opponents come game time next Sunday. SUU beat Northern Iowa, 2-1, and tied Drake, 1-1 (2ot). Both games were played at a neutral site in Flagstaff, Ariz. Southern Utah dropped its conference opener to Oral Roberts, 4-0, the team that South Dakota State faces the Friday before the game.
Last season, the Jacks won the offensive battle, 4-3. SDSU flew out of the game, taking a two-goal lead, courtesy of Darci Miller and Cori Bonte. Danielle Neuhalfen was credited with the assist to Bonte.
The Tunderbirds stormed back, scoring two goals of its own to even the score midway through the second half.
The Jackrabbits responded with two more goals, effectively ending the rally.
SUU scored once more in the final minute to draw within one, but it was not enough.
The Jacks outshot the Thunderbirds 16-13, including a 12-8 shots on goal advantage. SDSU took eight corner kicks, seven of which were in the second half, to SUU's three. The Thunderbirds' goalkeeper made eight saves to Stamatakis' five.
In the five series games, SDSU has outscored SUU 9-5, including a 7-3 advantage in the last two games.
Last week, Southern Utah dropped a 2-0 decision at Tulsa before tying Montana, 4-4 (2ot), at home.
LAST COMPETITION
Northern Iowa - South Dakota State had no trouble finding the goal on Sunday, but could not hold the lead late, tying Northern Iowa, 2-2…Junior Courtney Higgins started the scoring on passes from seniors Kelsey Ferguson and Kayla Braffet. The goal, Higgins' first of the season, made the score 1-0 at the 20:08 mark in the first period.
The Jackrabbits led 1-0 at halftime.
In the first period, UNI outshot SDSU 6-5, including a 5-2 shots on goal advantage. Neither team took a corner kick.
Senior Kat Donovan made five saves in the first period, the most saves in a single period this season for the SDSU goalkeeper.
Early in the second half, Braffet added another goal for the Jacks. The ball bounced around in the UNI box before Braffet put the ball in the back of the net, making the score 2-0 in the 55th minute.
The goal by Braffet is her third this season and gives her 17 career goals and ties for seventh-place on the all-time goal-scoring leaders. The assist to Higgins is her second of the season and gives her 15 career assists and moves her to within one of second-place on the all-time assist-scoring leaderboard. The combination of the two move Braffet into fifth-place for career scoring with 49 points.
Northern Iowa climbed a step closer 10 minutes later, making the score 2-1.
It looked as though the Panthers were going to fall short, but in the 81st minute, SDSU scored an own goal to equalize the score and extend the game.
The Jackrabbits outshot UNI in the second period 15-5, but had only one shot on goal to UNI's two. Each team took three corner kicks.
In the first overtime period, the action was limited, as neither team recorded a shot on goal. SDSU outshot UNI 1-0 and took two corner kicks, but could not find the go-ahead goal.
The second overtime period was a bit more eventful, as Northern Iowa tested Donovan by placing two shots on goal. Donovan made both saves for the Jacks, who did not take a shot.
The game ended in a 2-2 tie.
"I give a lot of credit to UNI for getting back into the game," SDSU head coach Lang Wedemeyer said. "But it's the same old story for us...plenty of chances to score buckets of goals, but for various reasons, it just isn't happening."
Overall, SDSU outshot the Panthers 21-14, but UNI held the shots on goal advantage at 10-7. The Jacks took five corner kicks to UNI's three.
The tie was the first of the season the Jackrabbits.
Iowa State - The South Dakota State women's soccer team dropped a tough road game at Iowa State on Friday, 1-0...
SDSU dealt with the problem that has haunted them all season; finishing scoring opportunities...
The first half was even on the scoreboard, 0-0.
Iowa State outshot SDSU 9-2 in the first half. The Jackrabbits held a 2-1 advatage in shots on goal, however, as well as a 4-2 corner kicks advantage.
Early in the second half, Iowa State was able to put one shot in the goal and it proved to be enough. The Cyclones' forward ran onto the ball and beat the defense in the 52nd minute.
SDSU outshot ISU in the second half, 9-8, but Iowa State held the advantage for the game, 17-11. ISU also edged the Jacks in shots on goal, 6-3. The Jacks took seven corner kicks to the Cyclones' five.
SDSU also had two shots hit the post, but could not find the equilizer.
"It was a hard fought match tonight," head coach Lang Wedemeyer said. "I thought we played well enough to win and hit the post twice, but it just wasn't meant to be. Now it's about refocusing for Northern Iowa."
Seniors Kelsey Ferguson and Kayla Braffet led the attack for the Jacks, taking four shots and three shots, respectively. One of Braffet's shots was on goal.
Senior goalkeeper Kat Donovan made five saves in the loss.
Next up for the Jacks - SDSU travels east to face Western Illinois on Friday, Sept. 7, and IUPUI on Sunday, Oct. 9. Game times are set for 3:30 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
The Jacks are 4-1-1 all-time against Western Illinois and 5-2-0 against IUPUI. Last season, SDSU beat IUPUI, 2-0, before tying WIU, 1-1 (2ot).
The Summit League – This weekend provides a full slate of Summit League conference games.
Opening the weekend schedule, South Dakota hosts Western Illinois at 4 p.m. in Vermillion, S.D., on Friday.
UMKC hosts IUPUI in Kansas City, Mo., at the same time.
North Dakota State hosts Southern Utah in Fargo, N.D., at the same time, as well.
On Saturday, the lone game is between Oakland and IPFW in Rochester, Mich., at 7 p.m.
On Sunday, NDSU hosts ORU at Noon.
Closing out the weekend schedule, UMKC hosts WIU at 1 p.m.
South Dakota hosts IUPUI at the same time.
