TAMPA, Fla. - The South Dakota State University men's swimming team wrapped up competition during its Winter Training Trip by posting a runner-up finish Saturday at the Tampa Relays.
SDSU placed second out of five teams at the meet, which consisted of 10 different relays. The Jackrabbits did not win any of the events, but did claim five runner-up finishes and were especially strong in the freestyle events.
The quartet of Blake Yeager, Nathaniel Weinman, Kyle Catani and Kyle Ochsner opened the meet with a runner-up finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay, posting a time of 7 minutes, 21.19 seconds. Yeager, Weinman and Catani later added a second-place effort in the 3x166 freestyle scramble relay, 5:13.06.
SDSU also received a runner-up finish in the 3x100 backstroke relay as the team of Phil Albu, Alex McLain and Dylan Stalheim turned in a time of 2:47.33.
Host Tampa won the meet with 140 points, followed by the Jackrabbits with 90. SUNY-Geneseo finished third with 88 points.
The Jackrabbits return to action Friday (Jan. 13) with a home dual against Iowa Central. Start time is 6 p.m. at the Stanley J. Marshall HPER Center Pool.
