FRESNO, Calif. – The South Dakota State equestrian team rode in the first day of competition at the United Equestrian Conference Championships on Friday, but the fourth-seeded Jackrabbits fell to top seed, No. 5 ranked and host Fresno State by the score of 12-3.
The loss drops the Jackrabbits to 6-8 on the season, while Bulldogs improve to 8-5 and advance to Saturday's UEC title meet against SMU.
“We started out the day holding them in fences and horsemanship, and did not expect to get swept in the next two events,” head coach Megan Rossiter said. “It was a crushing second half of the day, particularly since we're usually stronger in those two events.”
SDSU score two of the four points over fences, with senior Jordan Goodall leading the way with a score of 161.5, which gives her an overall record of 6-7 on the season, with the season wins representing her career-high for a single season.
Junior Marielle Golden also scored a point over fences with a score of 159, improving her season record to 7-6, which ties a school record for over fences wins in a season with Santana Wright, who posted seven wins in both 2011-12 and 2013-14.
The Jacks only other point on the day came in horsemanship from sophomore Danielle Dickerson, who scored a 136, which boosts her record to 4-7 this season. Victoria Johnson led all SDSU horsemanship riders with a score of 143.5, but that only earned her a tie, which gives her a 5-7-1 record on the season.
With the loss, SDSU rides in its final meet of the season on Saturday against No. 3 seed New Mexico State, which fell to No. 2 seed SMU on Friday. The meet begins at 11 a.m. CT.
