South Dakota State (10-1-0, 1-0-0 SUMMIT) picked up three points on the first day of Summit League action with a hard-fought victory over Western Illinois (6-3-1, 0-1-0 SUMMIT) Friday evening at Fishback Soccer Park. The Jackrabbits earned their fifth straight win, and fourth consecutive shutout, with a 2-0 decision to snap the Leathernecks' seven-game unbeaten streak.
The Jacks extended their home unbeaten streak to 29 games and improved their home Summit League record to 19-0-2 in the last five seasons. The win is SDSU's 10
th of the season, marking the ninth consecutive season the Jacks have amassed at least 10 victories, the longest such streak in the Summit League.
Maya Hansen opened the scoring in the 19
th minute with a spectacular move to separate herself from a Leatherneck defender, eventually finishing with her left foot from about nine yards out. It was Hansen's league-leading eighth goal of the season.
SDSU doubled its lead after a WIU hand ball inside the area gave the Jacks a penalty kick just seven minutes later.
Rachel Preston converted from the spot, beating the keeper to the bottom left corner for her first-career goal.
Jocelyn Tanner (6-1) made three saves to preserve her third straight clean sheet. Tanner and the Jackrabbit defense have not allowed a goal in over 425 minutes of game action.
Western Illinois and SDSU were even in shots with 10 apiece, but the Jacks held the edge in possession, 56% to 44%.
