CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – South Dakota State senior
Cece Limongi scored the Jackrabbits' first two goals and
Maya Hansen added another in the Jackrabbits' 3-0 victory on Thursday, Sept. 1, over Northern Iowa at the UNI Soccer Field. The win improved SDSU to 4-0-1 on the season while the Panthers were dealt their first loss and dropped to 3-1-1.
Limongi found the net for the first time this season in the 13th minute. Hansen completed a crossing pass from the right side of the field in front of UNI goalkeeper Caitlin Richards who was only able to get a finger tip on it. Limongi tracked down the ball and just feet away from goal swung and connected on a strike to put the Jacks ahead, 1-0.
The Jackrabbits held a 1-0 lead at the break as the two sides played a tight first half with SDSU holding a 7-6 edge in shots. In the second half the Jacks broke the contest open.
What seemed like a routine goal kick in the 49th minute by the Panthers led to Limongi's first brace of her college career. Richards sent the ball down field after a Hansen shot for SDSU was off target. However, an ensuing set of headers found a streaking Limongi down field who calmly 1-on-1 with the keeper kicked a shot into the net to give the Jacks a two-goal edge.
"That's the great thing about this team," SDSU head coach
Brock Thompson said. "Goals can come from a variety of people in a variety of ways and today was Cece's day. And she was ready for it. There was never a question on if she was going to score, it was when."
Hansen capped the scoring for South Dakota State in the 54th minute.
Kaycee Manding provided a strong set up off a corner kick and Hansen's ensuing header slipped past UNI for the Jackrabbits' third tally of the day.
The Jackrabbits held on to a clean sheet late with
Jocelyn Tanner recording back-to-back saves in the 77th minute in the Panthers' best attempts at goal.
"I thought it was a great day for us," Thompson said. "UNI is a really good team and I thought we put together a complete effort.
"We did a good job of keeping the ball and good job winning it back when we lost it. I'm proud of all the contributions we got. We played a lot of players and that will help us over the course of the season getting experience for a variety of people."
