MEN SECOND, WOMEN THIRD AT CHAMPIONSHIPS

VERMILLION, SD – South Dakota State garnered 20 medals, including six individual champions, three new school records and two championship MVP honors at the Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday.
Daniel Burkhalter started the day off strong after clocking a 4:08.21 for first place and the Summit League title in the men's mile while Ben Olson took second in 4:10.15 for silver.
Reid Pierzinski ran a gritty 400-meter dash as he clocked a 48.76 to edge another runner for the gold medal.
Pierre Lear was crowned Summit League champion of the men's 60-meter hurdles for the second year in a row after clocking an electric personal best time of 7.81 for a new school record.
Dominick Etherington took the crown in the shot put with his school record mark of 60-08.50. Wyatt Seagren also took eighth with a 51-02.75.
Joseph Minor-Williams won his second gold medal of the championships after running a 14:27.20 and Max Selbach finished third in 14:29.89. Cody Larson and Will Lohr also earned PRs in 14:33.97 and 15:14.31, respectively.
Leah Hansen earned another medal as she won the 5000-meter run in 17:01.17 to claim the top spot on the podium.
For their top award winning efforts, Dominick Etherington was named the Summit League Indoor Men's Field Championships MVP as Joseph Minor-Williams earned Summit League Indoor Men's Track Championship MVP.
Rich-Ann Archer claimed the title of runner-up in the 60-meter dash finals, running a 7.51 for silver.
Cerington Jones took silver as runner-up of the women's 400-meter dash finals after clocking a 55.25. Lauren Van Dyke (sixth, 56.70), Jenna Johnson (seventh, 57.92) and Erika Kuntz (eighth, 59.46) also competed.
Faith Leiseth finished as runner-up of the women's shot put with her mark of 48-00.75 to send her to the awards stand.
Reggie Slaba, Thailan Hallman, Lear and Pierzinski teamed up for the men's 4x400-meter relay and took second in 3:18.36.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Johnson, Jones, Hannah Whitbread and Van Dyke finished in second place with a time of 3:47.27, now the fourth fastest time in school history.
Brielle Dixon took third place in the 60-meter hurdle finals and broke her own school record after clocking an 8.43 in the event. Savannah Risseeuw took fifth in the race with a personal best 8.56.
Archer also competed in the women's 200-meter dash and clocked a 24.93 for fourth place in the tightly raced event.
Grace Waage ran a 5:00.84 for sixth place in the women's mile as Nicole Greyer finished just behind her in 5:01.15 for seventh. Claire Beckman came ninth in 5:02.81 and Emma Ecker was 14th in 5:14.50.
In the women's high jump, Madison Kizer led SDSU with her fourth place finish with a clearing of 5-05.00 while Taylor Jochum (5-03.00) finished 10th and Layne Kirkendoll (5-01.00) was 11th.
Ryan Benson finished the heptathlon in eighth place with a personal best 4755 points, which is now third in school history.
Jared Wipf tied his personal best in the 60-meter dash with a 6.80 while Manny Phoulom-Smith took sixth in 6.86 and Evan Henderson finished eighth in 6.92.
Phoulom-Smith also took sixth in the men's 200-meter dash finals with a clocking of 22.26
Connor Powers tied for seventh place in the high jump with a clearance of 6-05.25.
Tristin Hanna finished in sixth place of the triple jump with his mark of 45-09.25 while Sam Rohlfs took seventh in his first Summit League Championships with a personal best 45-08.00.
In the final team standings, the SDSU men finished in second place out of eight teams with 161.50 points while South Dakota took first with 179.50 points and North Dakota State was third with 144.50 points.
The Jackrabbit women finished the championships with 111 points for third place as South Dakota took first with 214 points and North Dakota State claimed second with 166 points.
A LOOK AHEAD: Should South Dakota State have any national qualifiers, athletes will compete at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on March 10 and 11.
