LOGAN, UTAH — South Dakota State gave up two goals in the first 28 minutes of its non-conference match at Utah State on Friday, Sept. 1, and despite a late first half goal never found an equalizer as the Jackrabbits fell, 2-1, to the Aggies at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field.Â
Â
The Aggies had a noticeable edge in possession early and capitalized. Bizzy Arevalo scored a goal in the ninth minute, while Nicole Hadlock-Hardy found the back of the net in the 28th minute, to give Utah State a 2-0 advantage.Â
Â
The home side held a 10-1 edge in shots heading into the halftime break, but SDSU did cut the deficit behind its lone attempt at goal. In the 44th minute,
Maleah Evans broke up a pass and got the ball to
Birna Bjornsdottir. The freshman passed it along to another freshman in
Katelyn Beulke who chipped it to an open
Kayla Anderson. The SDSU forward snuck a shot past the Utah State goalkeeper to make it 2-1 at halftime. Â
Â
Second half action was played on more even terms, though Utah State nearly broke the game open in the 63rd minute. A foul in the box gave the Aggies' Kelsey Kaufusi a penalty kick opportunity. Her attempt was stopped by SDSU goalkeeper
Jocelyn Tanner to keep it a 2-1 score.Â
Â
The next 27 minutes were heavily contested with each team getting a chance at corner kicks. The Jackrabbits' final run to tie the game came in the final minute of action.
Laney Murdzek had a shot blocked by an Aggie, while
Katherine Jones struck a shot off target before the finally horn sounded.Â
