South Dakota State opens the equestrian season with two home meets at the DeHaan Equestrian Center against Fresno State on Friday and UT Martin on Saturday.
Last season, the Jackrabbits finished with a 4-8 overall record and went 2-3 against conference opponents.
Friday's matchup against 10th-ranked Fresno State will begin at 9 a.m. and will be the season opener for both sides.
Both the indoor and outdoor arenas at the DeHaan Equestrian Center will be utilized throughout the course of the weekend for the jumping seat events of flat and fences along with the western disciplines of reining and horsemanship.
The Jackrabbits will match up against eighth-ranked UT Martin on Saturday after the Skyhawks finish their competition with the Bulldogs. For SDSU, their second matchup is slated for noon.
"I'm super confident in this season," said first-year head coach Kamerra Brown. "Yes, it's a young team but we have a lot of drive and they are hungry. With our leaders stepping up, they're setting the tone for our underclassmen."
In the 2023-24 season, South Dakota State edged out Fresno State with a 10-9 victory in their second competition of that season. The Jackrabbits lost to UT Martin twice last season. Their first matchup went in favor of the Skyhawks 15-5 in their competition in Martin, Tennessee, before closing out the season in the ECAC Championships with an 11-9 loss.
WESTERN RETURNERS: Senior Paige Wellendorf comes into this season after being named to the All-ECAC Horsemanship Team as well as an NCEA Ariat All-America Honorable Mention selection. Wellendorf finished the 2023-24 season with a 6-4-2 record in horsemanship.
Adisyn Kuxhaus finished with a 5-5-1 record last season in reining. Her five wins tied for the most individual reining victories on the team last season.
JUMPING SEAT RETURNERS: This season, Hannah Steele will be competing in both jumping seat disciplines (flat and fences). The senior from Woodstock, Georgia, finished last season with a 6-6 record in flat and 5-7 in fences. Steele was awarded the Most Outstanding Performer honors three times in flat last season.
Sophomore Kayla Scherer finished at 1-4 in fences as a freshman last season. In her sole competition in the flat discipline the Fort Collins, Colorado, native tallied a season-best score of 85. Similar to Steele, Scherer will be competing in both jumping seat events.
"I feel very confident with the implementation of a head coach, the addition of Stephanie Broughton leading the western [team] and Allie Kriendler in her third season leading the jumping seat," said Brown. "We are set up and working hard to have a successful season."
NEXT UP: South Dakota State will hold out for nearly a month before competing in their next competition. They will host UC Davis and Minnesota Crookston on Nov. 1 and 2, two ECAC conference opponents at the DeHaan Equestrian Center in Brookings.
The final competition of the fall season will be hosted by Delaware State on Nov. 15 and 16 where SDSU will compete against both Delaware State and UT Martin.
