The South Dakota State men's golf team begins its postseason journey this week at the Summit League Championships Sunday through Tuesday at Covered Bridge Golf Course in Sellersburg, Indiana.Â
The Jackrabbits enter the week as the No. 4 seed and will tee off with golfers from St. Thomas and Denver starting at 8:50 a.m. ET Sunday. SDSU finished the regular season with three top-five team finishes and five team scores at par or better. Most recently, SDSU took fifth out of 18 teams at Ohio State's Robert Kepler Intercollegiate.
The Jackrabbits will be led by All-Summit Second Team pick
Luke Honner, followed by
Ty Kretz,
Bryson Mercier,
Tyler Seeling and
Blake Schaper.
Honner, a sophomore, leads the Jackrabbits with an 72.48-stroke average this season. He opened the season with an 11th-place finish at the Island Resort Intercollegiate, where he tallied a 67 (-5) second round and ended with a 5-under three-round score. Honner finished runner-up at the Throw Down Up Top in October with a career-best 9-under scorecard. Honner tied for 14th as a freshman at last season's Summit League Championships, the best placing among the Jacks.
Kretz averages 72.74 strokes in his junior campaign and earned an honorable mention all-conference nod. His best finish of the season came at the Jackrabbit Invitational, where he placed ninth. He tied for 11th place at the Throw Down Up Top in October and was 14th at the Hawkeye Invitational earlier this month. Kretz was on the Summit League Second Team as a sophomore last season. He tied for 20th place at the 2023 conference championships and was 16th as a freshman in 2022.
Mercier, also a sophomore, was also an all-Summit honorable mention. He averages 72.93 shots this year. He won the Jackrabbit Invitational in March with a 5-under tally. Mercier also placed in the top-10 at the Loyola Intercollegiate, where he went 7-under to claim eighth place.
Seeling is fourth on the team with a 74.61-stroke average. He has two top-10 finishes in his sophomore season, highlighted by a t-3rd place finish at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate to end the regular season. Seeling fired a career-best 67 during the first round of that event.
Schaper averages 74.61 strokes per 18 holes. His best finish of the season came at the Jackrabbit Invitational in March, where he tied for 17th place.
