BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State plays its first home match in nearly a month on Sunday when the Jackrabbits host Drake. First kick between the Jacks and Bulldogs is slated for 1 p.m. at Fishback Soccer Park.Â
Â
The match is also part of SDSU's annual GOALd game as the Jackrabbits raise money alongside Alex's Lemonade Stand, which is a leader in funding pediatric research projects across the globe, during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. New GOALd game shirts will be available for $15 on site ahead of the contest.
Â
Admission will be free for all attendees thanks to Northwestern Mutual.
Â
SDSU completed a five-game road stretch last Sunday. The Jackrabbits won four of the matches via shutout, while their lone loss came in a 1-0 defeat to Colorado College on Aug. 22. South Dakota State is 4-2 overall with four non-conference matches remaining. Three of the four games take place in Brookings.
Â
The Jacks and Bulldogs square off in what has become a routine series. SDSU holds a 9-6-2 all-time record over Drake. The sides are 1-1-1 in the last three meetings with SDSU earning a 2-1 victory in Des Moines last season.
Avery Murdzek scored a goal in the matchup a season ago, while
Katherine Jones and
Maleah Evans registered assists. Drake enters this season's clash with an 0-4-2 record.
Â
Following the 2-1 season-opening defeat to Kansas, SDSU has ratcheted up its defensive effort. The Jacks have won three straight matches by 3-0 scores. The shutout streak is the longest since 2021 when that squad recorded four straight. Prior to that, the 2019 team produced 12 consecutive shutout victories in the run to an NCAA Tournament campaign.
Â
The Jackrabbits have been highlighted by balance over the course of the 2024 season. Nine different players have scored goals, led by the three from sophomore forward
Katelyn Beulke. Seven Jacks have dished out assists with Jones carrying the category with a team-high four. Beulke (6) is just ahead of
Mia Bosch (5) for the team lead in points scored.
Emma Knack and
Stephanie Leckwold have split time evenly so far at goalkeeper, with both seeing success. Each have under 1.00 goals-against averages and sit above .860 in save percentage.Â
Â
SDSU next faces unfamiliar foes in Wayne State, USC Upstate and Oregon State. The Jacks are 4-0 all-time against the Wildcats, last meeting in 2018. They lost 3-0 to the Beavers in a 2005 meeting and have never played the Spartans.
