BROOKINGS, S.D. - SDSU dropped another five-set slugfest on Thursday night, as they fell to the St. Thomas Tommies, 3-2.
The two squads battled back and forth, with the Jackrabbits taking a thrilling opening set, before the Tommies battled back to take the next two sets, in dominant fashion. The Jackrabbits rallied back and took the fourth set, before the two squads went to war in the fifth. The Tommies proved to be too strong for the Jackrabbits in the end, pulling off a 3-0 run from the brink of defeat to beat the Jackrabbits in the set, 18-16.
Sylvie Zgonc put together a double-double with 24 kills and 17 digs, a season-high for the senior outside hitter. Marisa Michaelis and Taylor Byl both matched their season-highs for kills with nine and eight kills respectively. Joslyn Richardson put together a 20-dig night to lead the Jackrabbit defense, followed by Hannah Klein who had 17 digs.
For the Tommies, Anya Schmidt led the Tommies with 23 kills but it was Addie Schmotzer that made the difference for St. Thomas, putting down 16 kills and nine blocks in her return to action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1: The Jackrabbits got off to a slow start in the first set as the Tommies sped out to a 15-6 lead at the media timeout. But the Jacks slowly chipped away at the deficit, putting together a 6-0 run that forced a St. Thomas timeout and cut the Tommie lead to three. St. Thomas rallied and put the set on the brink of ending, up 24-21, before the Jacks rallied off a 5-0 run to steal the set from the Tommies, 26-24.
Set 2: The second set was more of the same for the Tommies, speeding out to a 15-11 at the media timeout, but this time they didn't look back, adding a 6-0 run late in the set to close the door on the Jackrabbits. The Tommies took the second set, 25-18, evening the game at one set a piece.
Set 3: The Tommie defense stifled the Jackrabbit offense in the third set as the Tommies held the Jacks to a .000 hitting percentage on just six kills. St. Thomas got out to an 8-2 lead, but the Jacks rallied back and took the lead on a 5-0 run to make the game, 12-11. But once again, the Tommies responded adding two 4-0 runs and putting the set out of the Jackrabbits reach, taking a 2-1 lead on a 25-21 set win.
Set 4: The Jacks changed things up in the fourth set as the two squads traded blows early, with the Jacks forcing their first media timeout of the night, up 15-12. The two teams were able to keep it close, but a 3-0 run by the Jacks late in the set was the nail in the coffin that sent the match to a fifth set as SDSU took the fourth set, 25-22.
Set 5: St. Thomas got out to a 4-2 lead early in the fifth set, and put their foot on the gas as they put up a 11-8 lead over the Jacks in the race to 15. A 3-0 run from Jacks put them back in the game, and kills from
Hannah Klein and
Brooke Larsen put them on the edge of taking the match. But the Tommies stood tough and fended off two match points before pulling off a 3-0 run to steal the match from the Jacks, 18-16.
