BROOKINGS, S.D. — South Dakota State hosts 36 schools with over 1,600 student-athletes for the SDSU Classic, beginning Friday afternoon and ending Saturday evening.
HEAD COACH ROD DEHAVEN
"It is a huge weekend of track and field at Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex, with a huge turnout of teams and student athletes from across the upper Midwest. For our squads, it is the last big meet before the championships in a couple of weeks, so naturally, we are hoping for some big marks across all event areas. And we also hope that we are creating a great competition for all those teams in attendance."
THE MEET
The SDSU Indoor Classic is slated to be the largest collegiate indoor meet in the upper Midwest this year, with over 300 athletes competing in the mile and 200-meter events. The meet will begin with the 200-meter dash and pole vault at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13. Most events are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 14, beginning with track events at 10:30 a.m., and field events kicking off at noon.
ATHLETES TO WATCH
Last time out,
Cody Larson won the mile competition at the Iowa State Classic. Larson posted a time of 4:01.82 to become the third-fastest performer in program history behind teammate
Brandon Kampsen, who clocked 4:01.52 a week earlier, and program record holder Head Coach
Rod DeHaven, who set the record at 4:00.95 in 1987. This week, Larson will race the mile in hopes of posting a time under four minutes to break DeHaven's record. Larson will compete in the fast heat of the mile, slated to start around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14.
Brandon Kampsen and
Jackson Dutcher will be racing in the mile alongside Larson. Both men, alongside Larson, hope to post sub-four-minute times. An under four-minute mark would place them in the top-10 mile times in the Midwest region.
In field events,
Caiden Fredrick will be the one to watch in the weight throw competition. Frederick has competed twice this season, landing in the top three both times. Fredrick opened the season with a first-place finish in the weight throw with a mark of 67-04.25 (20.53m). Later, Fredrick competed at the UND open, where he finished third in weight throw with a mark of 60-11.25 (18.57m). The weight throw competition will begin at noon on Saturday, Feb. 14.
The women's 4x400-meter relay team is slated to do exceptionally well at the Indoor Classic. The squad will consist of
Jenna Johnson,
Reese Luze,
Maggie Madsen, and
Erika Kuntz. The team will likely post an SDSU top-10 time to round out the meet. The women's 4x400-meter relays will begin at 7:25 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14.
