Courtney Chacon enters her seventh season with South Dakota State in 2026. She began her career at SDSU as an assistant coach in the spring of 2020 and was elevated to associate head coach in July 2024. Chacon also serves as the Jackrabbits' recruiting coordinator.
With Chacon on staff, South Dakota State is 102-66 overall and 65-35 in the Summit League.
In 2025, Chacon helped the Jackrabbits to a perfect 16-0 mark in the conference regular season. The Jacks finished runner-up in the Summit League postseason and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season. SDSU finished the year with a 23-5 overall record - the program’s third most wins in the Division I era - and a final RPI of 36. The Jackrabbits picked up the first win over a Big Ten team in program history when SDSU beat Illinois 3-1 in the season opener. The Jacks also beat Ole Miss at First Bank & Trust Arena for another win over a power conference opponent. The victories over the Illini and the Rebels marked the program’s second and third wins over a power conference opponent in the Division I era.
Five SDSU players earned all-conference honors from the Summit League in 2025. Sylvie Zgonc was again named the Summit League Player of the Year to go with AVCA All-Regional and honorable mention All-America accolades. Zgonc was the fourth player in Summit League history to win Player of the Year in consecutive seasons and first since 2008-09. Joining Zgonc on the Summit League First Team were Madison Burr, Rylee Martin and Sydni Schetnan. Hannah Klein was named to the Summit League All-Freshman Team. Additionally, Joslyn Richardson was named the Summit League Scholar of the Tournament for the second straight year.
A number of Jackrabbbits put up impressive numbers in 2025. Zgonc posted top five marks in program history in total kills, kills per set, points per set and total attacks. Martin’s 1,035 total assists in her junior season ranks fourth in program history while her 10.25 assists per set ranks first. SDSU’s middle duo of Schetnan and Burr combined for four record book updates in blocks and blocks per set for a season. Richardson set a new program record for single-season ace serves with 41, three of which came against Arizona in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
Chacon helped the Jackrabbits go 27-3 (15-1 Summit) in 2024 and earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. SDSU started the season with a 22-0 mark, the best start to a season and the longest win streak in program history, and went on to win the Summit League regular season and finish runner-up in the Summit League postseason. The Jackrabbits’ first NCAA at-large bid in program history sent SDSU to Lincoln, Nebraska, where the team fell to Miami in the opening round. SDSU's final RPI of the season was 34.
Three Jackrabbits earned Summit League honors in 2024. Sylvie Zgonc was named the Summit League Player of the Year, AVCA All-Region and All-America honorable mention as just a sophomore. Her 4.37 kills per set and 4.88 points per set both rank third in a single season for the Jackrabbits. Zgonc was joined on the All-Summit First Team and All-Region team by Sydni Schetnan. Schetnan also set a new program record with a .388 hit percentage in 2024 and tallied 146 total blocks on the year, the second most in a single season at SDSU. Madison Burr was tabbed the Summit League Freshman of the Year and was an honorable mention all-league selection. Her 130 blocks in her freshman season is the fourth-most my an SDSU player in a single season. Rylee Martin tallied 38 ace serves on the year, also program record.
The Jackrabbits set six team statistic records in 2024 - kills per set (13.13), hit percentage (.242), aces per set (1.59), total blocks (310.0), blocks per set (2.74) and points per set (17.47). SDSU also set a new volleyball attendance record at its home opener against Kansas City with 2,853 fans. It was also the first official event held at the newly-renovated First Bank & Trust Arena.
In 2023, SDSU went 9-20 overall and 7-9 in Summit League contests. The team returned to the Summit League postseason for the third straight season. Jackrabbit freshman Sylvie Zgonc was named the Summit League's Freshman of the Year and was an all-conference first team honoree.
The Jackrabbits went 18-15 overall and 11-7 in Summit League action in 2022, Chacon’s third season. The team finished with a winning record for the second straight year, marking the first time SDSU has had consecutive winning seasons since 2006-2007. The Jackrabbits accepted an invitation to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship and beat Louisiana in the opening round for the first national postseason victory in program history. Crystal Burk was named to the all-Summit League first team for the second straight season and Masa Scheierman was an all-freshman team selection.
SDSU went 19-12 (10-8 Summit) in 2021, posting the most total wins for the program since 2011. With Chacon's help, State qualified for the Summit League Championship Tournament for the first time since 2010 and won a postseason match for the first time since 2007. Two Jackrabbits earned Summit League postseason honors in 2021 - Crystal Burk was a First-Team All-Summit League pick and Ella Thompson was named to the All-Freshman Team.
In the 2020 season, Chacon's first with the Jacks, the team went 6-11 overall and had a 6-10 record in league play. SDSU won six Summit League regular season matches, the most since 2012, to finish sixth in the conference standings. The postseason field was narrowed due to COVID-19, leaving the Jackrabbits out of the Summit League Tournament. Crystal Burk was an honorable mention All-Summit League pick.
Prior to joining the SDSU staff, Chacon served as an assistant volleyball coach at Western Colorado during the 2019 season. She worked primarily with defense and setters, while also assisting with recruiting, operations and academics.
Before Western Colorado, Chacon spent the 2018 season as a volunteer assistant coach for the University of Wyoming volleyball team. She also gained experience working numerous volleyball camps from 2013 through 2018.
At the University of Wyoming Chacon earned her bachelor’s degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences, then continued her educating at Wyoming to earn a master’s degree in Kinesiology and Health with a plan b project in Coaching Issues and Reflective Practice in Collegiate Sport.
During the course of the 2017 season Chacon worked as an intern with a sports psychology consultant for the Wyoming’s women’s volleyball and men’s basketball teams. Following her internship, she worked as a graduate assistant for those teams working with sports psychology, exercise psychology, social cultural aspect of sport, exercise and physical activity, and personal health from 2017 to 2019.
In college, Chacon was a member of Wyoming’s volleyball team from 2013 to 2016. In her collegiate career she recorded 3,352 assists placing her sixth in the record book at Wyoming. Also recording 441 sets played throughout her career, the seventh most set ever by a Wyoming volleyball player. Along with recording the tenth most assists in a single season as a sophomore with 1,206 total assists. Chacon is one of three Cowgirls in program history to achieve over 3,000 assists and 900 digs in her career.
